The closure of Polish cinemas earlier this year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, dealt a temporary blow to the 17th edition of the Millennium Docs Against Gravity Film Festival, which was slated to take place in May. But the organizers were determined to hit the ground running as they geared up for a fall reboot, which will unspool across seven Polish cities between Sept. 4-13 with some 1,200 screenings—“more than at the Berlinale,” notes festival founder Artur Liebhart.
Liebhart has spent nearly two decades at the forefront of Poland’s documentary film community, both through Millennium Docs Against Gravity and through his distribution company, Against Gravity. “From the very beginning…our main goal, and our main effort, and all the plan was focused on developing [and] increasing the audience for documentary films in Poland,” he says.

The gathering celebrates entering middle age in style, with its 30th anniversary edition swapping champagne and party hats for taking a closer look at the world. Founded in 1990, Nordisk Panorama Film Festival, the biggest film festival for Nordic documentary and short films — organized by Nordisk Panorama and supported by the city of Malmö, Film i Skåne and Region Skåne — will see 14 documentaries competing for the title of the Best Nordic Documentary and a hefty prize of €11,000 in September. Today, the San Francisco Film Society today announced the ten finalists for the 2016 Sffs Documentary Film Fund awards totaling $75,000. The Sffs Documentary Film Fund supports feature-length documentaries in postproduction and was created to support singular nonfiction film work. Finalists were selected from more than 200 applications, and winners will be announced in mid-September.
