The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards are approaching on September 11, and I’m curious about how a number of the categories will turn out. I recently analyzed the races for Best Pop, Best R&b, Best Alternative and Best Rock. So let’s break down a few more of the genre contests.
SEEMegan Thee Stallion hosting 2024 VMAs: She’s also a multiple nominee at the event
Best Hip-Hop
Only one video here is nominated for Video of the Year, which means it might have an edge: Eminem’s “Houdini.” The song was a smash for Eminem as well, arguably the biggest hit nominated besides Gunna’s “Fukumean.” But an advantage that Eminem has over Gunna is that he has a more active fan base, even beyond hip-hop enthusiasts. “Houdini,” for instance, was a hit on alternative radio, as well as pop and urban radio, highlighting the veteran rapper’s cross-genre appeal.

When Peso Pluma announced his album Éxodo in his historic Rolling Stone cover story earlier this year, he promised to reveal a “darker side” of himself and explore a part of his artistry he hadn’t touched on his excellent 2023 breakthrough, Génesis. “There’s going to be a lot of things about why we do what we do,” he said coyly about his new music. On Éxodo, Peso delivers a solid album and generally stays true to his word, but he struggles to push himself out of his comfort zone on the album’s corridos.

From Génesis to Éxodo.
Peso Pluma graced the cover of Rolling Stone‘s Future of Music issue on Monday — and in it, he announced that he will follow his breakthrough record Génesis with a new album this summer, titled Éxodo.
In the interview, Peso shared that Éxodo will be “more of a direct response to the negative press that seems to surround him.”
“[On Génesis] people already saw the good side, the superhero side. But I think this year, they’re going to know a darker side,” he said. “There’s...

Pop open the champagne! On Thursday, Peso Pluma surprised his fans with one final song for 2023, “Rompe La Dompe,” concluding a highly successful breakthrough year.
“Último corrido del año,” the singer teased on Instagram earlier on Thursday, posting a snippet of the track.
The chilled-back corrido — whose title translates to “open up the Dom Pe,” referencing Dom Pérignon champagne — hears Pluma alongside Óscar Maydon and Junior H singing about the start of a big party as they try to forget about a former lover. “Red eyes and I caress your leg,...

Ed Maverick is making the saddest song on Peso Pluma’s Génesis even sadder. On Thursday, the Mexican indie singer-songwriter released a cover of “Lagunas,” Peso’s track with Jasiel Nuñez about forcing himself to stay away from someone he loves so that he can heal.
“Perhaps in another galaxy things were different,” sings Maverick in his distinct melancholic voice. “Perhaps there we’d have what we always had wanted.”
“Lagunas” was the second-to-last track on Génesis and hears Peso and Nuñez introspecting following the conclusion of a relationship backed by soft guitars and requinto.

Could this be Latin music’s next It couple? In between giggles, Peso Pluma and Nicki Nicole got sweet and flirty while speaking to Rolling Stone on their first red carpet together at the 2023 Latin Grammys.

“I’m supporting the queen!” Pluma joked.

Last year at the Grammys, Bad Bunny’s LP Un Verano Sin Ti made history as the first Spanish-language project nominated for Album of the Year, and his song “Moscow Mule” got a nod under Best Pop Solo Performance. These all seemed to be signs that the Recording Academy was broadening its view of Latin music and art and considering it for major categories, rather than siloing it to genre-specific categories.
But sadly, it’s back to bad habits this year. No Latin artists appear in the Big Four, despite...

Regional Mexican music has officially gone global. A new wave of artists has redefined the age-old sound of Mexico, aiding in it resonating with a new generation of fans. Acts like Peso Pluma, Eslabón Armado, Grupo Frontera, DannyLux, and Conexión Divina have turned the music of their roots into a multi-genre movement.
"It's a super-cool moment for our culture and our music, and being able to contribute to this musical movement is a dream come true for all six of us," Adelaido "Payo" Solís III, the lead singer of Grupo Frontera, tells Popsugar. "We feel incredibly proud and privileged to be a part of this música Mexicana explosion happening on a global scale."

Lately, Peso Pluma’s raspy twang seems to be everywhere. It’s there, creaking with grit and originality, on his Eslabón Armado hit “Ella Baila Sola,” which became the first regional Mexican song to reach the Top 10 on Billboard’s Hot 100. (Fans have been so enamored by the way he croaks out “Bella!” in his opening verse that they’ve started a viral TikTok challenge, imitating the singer.) His distinct delivery on “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 55,” his collaboration with famed Argentine producer Bizarrap, drove the track to Number One on Spotify’s Global charts.
