- Linda Smith was born on January 25, 1958 in Erith, Kent, England, UK. She was an actress and writer, known for The Mark Steel Lectures (2003), Trevor's World of Sport (2003) and Not Tonight with John Sergeant (2005). She died on February 27, 2006 in London, England, UK.
- She was voted "The Wittiest Living Person" by listeners to BBC Radio 4's Word Of Mouth programme.
- Throughout the 1980s she became one of the few women to conquer the male dominated world of stand up comedy in clubs and universities.
- She was President of the British Humanist Association.
- "People knock ASBOs, but you have to bear in mind they're the only qualification some of these kids are ever going to get." (On Anti-social behavior orders)
- I had absolutely no expectations of Tony Blair, and even I have been disappointed.
- [on politician David Mellor] "The thinking woman's fat, ugly bastard."
- I play all my country and western music backwards. Your lover returns, your dog comes back to life and you cease to be an alcoholic.
- I only found out that the beliefs I hold are 'humanistic' when the BHA kindly invited me to be its president! I am sure that I'm typical of many 'unconscious' humanists. The BHA's work is more important than ever - with fundamentalism of many kinds on the rise, the rational voice of Humanism needs to be heard. I see publicizing Humanism in order that other people might identify themselves not just negatively as atheists, but positively as humanists, as a vital part of my role. I'm looking forward to evangelizing - if that's the right word!
