- Coached the New York Islanders to four consecutive Stanley Cup championships (1980-1983).
- Head coach of the NHL's St. Louis Blues (1970-1971 thru 1972-1973) and New York Islanders (1973-1974 thru 1985-1986 & 1988-1989 thru 1993-1994).
- Defensman with the National Hockey League's Detroit Red Wings (1953-1954 & 1955-1956 thru 1957-1958), Chicago Black Hawks (1958-1959 thru 1960-1961), Toronto Maple Leafs (1961-1962 thru 1965-1966), and St. Louis Blues (1967-1968 thru 1970-1971).
- Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in the "builders" category, 1996.
- Will sign a 1 day contract to coach his 1,500th game on November 3, 2007 when the NY Islanders play the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Nassau Coliseum. (November 2007)
