Growing up in the tough neighborhood of South Jamaica Queens, Michael Newman is no stranger to the inner workings of the streets.
On the flip side Michael has gained the recognition for being intellectually creative, possessing the ability to spin words into vivid imagery.
Naturally, Michael would gravitate toward writing and recording music once he realized how the depth of his word play captured the listener's ear. As an avid reader and a lover of thought-provoking content, Michael penned song lyrics with ease mastering the art of storytelling.
However, being exposed to the crime ridden scenery in his Jamaica Queens neighborhood, Michael's talent couldn't save him from the lure of the streets and the temptations proved to be too strong. Michael found himself on the road to prison to serve an eight-year sentence.
After completing almost half of his sentence, Michael was granted parole to a halfway house, and exited prison with a new perspective, purpose and a sharper pen. With a commitment to immerse himself in his writings, he documented things he had seen and lived while in the prison system.
Armed with a litany of scribblings on random scraps of paper, a tattered legal notepad and life experience, he began to assemble what would become his first script: "Halfway Home: Prisons Purgatory". Further, he wouldn't stop at just the script. Michael went on to produce, direct, write and perform most of the musical score, and even play an extra in his own film.
Never one to pass on the opportunity for growth and development, Michael then started a film company, "FLYING LAND-YACHT FILMS" to further support his project, with the goal being to showcase his talents. His other objective was to establish a hub for other independent filmmakers, musicians, artists and other creatives looking for a company to help develop and bring their content to fruition.
Looking forward to a bright future, Michael is in the process of developing more screenplays and has started taking his background acting to the next level. To date, he has appeared in HBO Max's series pilot Girls On The Bus (G.O.T.B) and also Law & Order SVU.
