Voters in Tuesday’s midterms delivered a series of historic firsts for minorities and marginalized people. Minority candidates, women, and members of the LGBTQ community will be taking up the mantle of elected office in their states for the first time.
In both local and national races, LGBTQ individuals will be occupying seats and offices for the first time, overcoming an election cycle marked by vicious attacks against the LGBTQ community.
In Massachusetts, Maura Healey defeated Republican Geoff Diehl to become both the first woman and first open lesbian to hold the state’s governorship.

Betsy Johnson, an independent candidate for governor of Oregon, wears wildly oversized glasses and campaigns at homey events billed as “Beers With Betsy.” A former state senator who abandoned the Democratic Party, Johnson markets herself as the “goldilocks” alternative to the “extremes” of partisan politics, insisting she’s beholden to “only to Oregonians” and not to ”special interests.”
It’s an attractive pitch. But in Johnson’s case, it bears little relation to reality.
Johnson is not a middle-of-the-road politician. She owns a Mac-10 submachine gun — and received an A-rating from the NRA.

Nicholas Kristof, who has written a column for The New York Times for the past two decades, has left his post as he weighs whether to run for governor of Oregon next year.
Kristof filed a statement of organization of a campaign committee with the Oregon secretary of state. If he decides to run, he would run as a Democrat. The current governor, Kate Brown, also a Democrat, is not running due to term limits.
Kristof has been on leave since June, when he told the company that he was considering a run in his native state, the Times reported.
He wrote in a note on his departure, “This has been my dream job, even with malaria, a plane crash in Congo and periodic arrests abroad for committing journalism. Yet here I am, resigning — very reluctantly.”
At a time when political opinion has flooded the marketplace, Kristof’s columns have...

States have been preparing to ramp up vaccination efforts after the Trump administration said it would release its reserve of Covid-19 vaccine doses, but two days later, governors were learning the promised reserve was not what they had hoped.
According to the Washington Post, when Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said Tuesday that the government would begin shipping vaccine doses from a stockpile, state and local health officials interpreted that to mean they would get additional doses of the vaccine that the government had been holding back.

As California passed 1 million Covid-19 cases and infections continued to increase across the country, California Governor Gavin Newsom, Oregon Governor Kate Brown and Washington Governor Jay Inslee issued travel advisories on Friday urging visitors entering their states or returning home from travel outside these states to self-quarantine to slow the spread of the virus. The travel advisories urge against non-essential out-of-state travel, ask people to self-quarantine for 14 days after arriving from another state or country.
“California just surpassed a sobering threshold – one million Covid-19 cases – with no signs of the virus slowing down,” said California Governor Gavin Newsom on Friday. “Increased cases are adding pressure on our hospital systems and threatening the lives of seniors, essential workers and vulnerable Californians. Travel increases the risk of spreading Covid-19, and we must all collectively increase our efforts at this time to keep the virus at bay and save lives.”

Portland — A “Trump 2020 Cruise Rally,” comprised of hundreds of flag-waving pro-Trump pickup truck drivers, detoured into downtown Portland, Oregon, on Saturday night, setting off clashes between right- and left-wing protesters. Events turned deadly when a supporter of the far-right-wing group Patriot Prayer was shot and killed. Police have yet to formally identify either the victim or any leads on the shooter, but local media have surfaced the name of a suspect first identified by 4chan.

Summer morning light, the federal courthouse is eerily calm. The perimeter of the Mark O. Hatfield building, a 16-story high-rise occupying a block of downtown Portland, Oregon, emerged in July as the front line for nightly assaults by federal agents against Black Lives Matter protesters, whom President Trump labeled “sick and deranged Anarchists & Agitators.”
The pretext for the incursion of federal forces into Portland — where unidentified armed agents in fatigues snatched protesters and shoved them into unmarked vans — was defacement of this courthouse. But the criminal mischief against the building was modest,...

The state of Oregon is suing the Trump administration in federal court to halt what it likens to the “kidnap and false arrest” of protesters in downtown Portland, alleging that the administration’s secret-police tactics are violating core constitutional rights.
In a harrowing new tactic, reminiscent of fascist regimes, armed federal officers without agency badges have begun grabbing protesters off the street, throwing them into unmarked cars and jailing them without formally arresting them, according to court records. The state of Oregon is seeking a permanent injunction to prevent what...

Forty-eight hours later, the only mark of the “riot” at the Portland Police union headquarters is a small hole in one of the gold-tinted windows, plugged with putty.
The police killing of George Floyd on the streets of Minneapolis on May 25th unleashed a torrent of anger against police departments across the nation. But in this Pacific Northwest city, with a shameful history of racism and police killings of black residents, the reaction has been intense and sustained. Protesters have marched by the thousands across bridges. They have toppled statues...

When fears of the Covid-19 pandemic first started circulating, Brodie Grody, a stripper in Portland, Oregon, saw her income dwindle to about half of what it usually was. “People were scared,” she says. “They were going out less. They were buying fewer lap dances and sitting at the stage less because they were worried about getting too close to us.”
Then, when Gov. Kate Brown announced last week she would be shutting down all restaurants and bars in Oregon, Grody’s already-dwindling income was “wiped out completely,” she says. “We...

Oregon was one of the first states to document community spread of the coronavirus — meaning that patients who got sick with Covid-19 illness had been going about their daily lives, without a connection to anyone known to be infected or at high risk due to travel abroad.
Yet as the virus has spread, Oregon’s approach to the disease has been a quite different from that of neighboring Washington state, which has led the nation in deaths from the illness. On Wednesday, Rolling Stone spoke with Dr. Richard Leman — a...

Salem, Ore. — Massive logging trucks circled the streets around the capitol, flying American flags in their truck beds and blasting horns, as hundreds of right-wing protesters rallied in support of Oregon’s fugitive Gop senators, whose week-long walkout appears to have killed the state’s ambitious cap-and-trade climate legislation.
The rally was a show of force for rural Oregonians. Hundreds of demonstrators, mostly white men, some in hard hats, some wearing camo and hunting orange, many sporting unruly beards, spilled out over the steps in front of the statehouse. The...

Is billionaire Nike founder Phil Knight trying to buy a Republican governor? If that question sounds outlandish, so are the facts. Knight has directly given the campaign of Oregon gubernatorial candidate Knute Buehler $2.5 million dollars. Knight has also given $1 million to the Republican Governors’ Association, which steered nearly that amount into Buehler’s campaign.
Knight’s backing of a member of Donald Trump’s Republican party creates dissonance at a moment when Nike has launched its new “Just Do It” campaign featuring blackballed quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Trump has maligned Kaepernick...
