Bob Garfield, Longtime Co-Host Of Wnyc’s ‘On The Media’, Fired For Bullying By New York Public Radio
Bob Garfield, longtime co-host of Wnyc’s On the Media, has been fired by the station’s parent entity New York Public Radio for violating its anti-bullying policy, one of a series of measures instituted after a storm of harassment and abuse accusations several years ago that led to high profile exits of on-air personalities and managers.
Garfield, who has hosted the weekly hourlong show with Brooke Gladstone for 20 years, was fired after two separate investigations found he had violated Nypr policy. He had also been disciplined and warned after an inquiry in 2020. Gladstone will continue to host On the Media, the Peabody Award-winning show with millions of listeners broadcast by over 400 public radio stations. It offers deep-dive and witty analyses of pressing issues of the times from politics and race to climate and Covid through the lens of media and media coverage.

SAG-AFTRA and New York Public Radio have reached a voluntary recognition agreement that will add more than 30 per diem and temporary employees to the union’s 18-year-old contract.
The existing contract currently covers over 100 full-time workers at Nypr. The new unit made the request to unionize on July 12.
“This agreement goes to the heart of SAG-aftra’s mission of advocating for media professionals working in today’s gig economy,” said SAG-aftra president Gabrielle Carteris. “This unit made the request to unionize only a few weeks ago. The fact that this agreement was successfully achieved in a timely manner speaks to the collaborative work of our union and Nypr as partners. We’re excited to extend the New York Public Radio family and welcome the new members to the union.”

Chance the Rapper is now a local-media mogul.
He announced the deal to buy Chicagoist, a local news site covering the Windy City, in one of his four new tracks released at midnight Et Wednesday. In the song, “I Might Need Security,” he explains why.
“I bought the Chicagoist just to run you racist bitches outta business,” Chance says in the song, which includes a backing-vocal loop throughout that repeats “f— you.”
Chicagoist.com has been dormant since November 2017, when owner Joe Ricketts, the billionaire founder of Td Ameritrade, summarily shut down the site along with Gothamist, DNAinfo and others. That came after the sites’ staffers voted to join the Writers Guild of America East as their collective-bargaining rep.
In a statement, Chance the Rapper said, “I’m extremely excited to be continuing the work of the Chicagoist, an integral local platform for Chicago news, events and entertainment… I look...
