Stephen W Bates
Stephen W Bates in a British filmmaker, photographer and Creative Director. He's known for films that promote social and environmental behaviour change.
Born in Norwich in 1967, he was adopted from birth and grew up in Upminster on the eastern peripheries of London. He attended the Coopers Company and Coburn School excelling in Art and Graphical Communications and studied Graphic Design and Typography at St Martins School of Art and Design.
During his early career in Advertising, Stephen art-directed campaigns for major brands including Ford, Amstrad, Heineken, Olivetti and others.
In the mid 90s, he was recruited to head up Marketing Communications for the publications division of the childcare charity Barnardo's. There, he began to develop content and film to promote the charity's causes as well as the same for a number of other high-profile client charities.
By the late 90s, Stephen had returned to the agency side working on campaigns for UK government initiatives ('Think' Road safety campaign, 'Fit for Life' healthy living campaign).
In 2003, he co-founded EnviroComms established to support British Local Authorities as they introduced new kerbside recycling services following the UK's adoption of the EU landfill directive. Stephen rapidly became recognised as one of the UK's leading environmental communicators within the waste management sector having produced a number of award winning campaigns and films.
In 2007 he began to work on international projects with a focus upon developing nations working with International Development Agencies including the UN, World Bank and others. He's produced films and campaigns that have supported critical sector reform in a diverse range of locations including Sierra Leone, Cyprus, Albania and the Caribbean.
Stephen founded the Mobius Agency in 2019 to broaden support beyond environment to encompass social and global change.
In 2022, it was announced that Mobius Film would be launched as the maker of social interest films and content.
Stephen lives in rural Essex, is Married with two Children.
