The two major elements that set this sequel series apart from its predecessor are its ensemble cast and their thoroughly nuanced backstories.
Those pieces have never shone as brightly as on Quantum Leap Season 2 Episode 5.
We've known since the premiere that circumstances have changed in Magic's life, but we learn so much more about the calm and steady project leader here. It's quite remarkable, and Ernie Hudson's performance is riveting.
It shouldn't come as a surprise that Magic would jump in as hologuide with Addison benched.
Magic has always felt responsible for Ben's leap, even though no one except Ben and Janis knew about it before it happened. However, since Magic restarted the program, he indirectly created the circumstances that separated Ben from Addison.
Furthermore, with Al gone, Magic remains the closest connection to Sam Beckett at HQ, having hosted Sam when Sam leaped into the Vietnam War to save his brother,...

For a show based on the premise of time travel via body snatching, Quantum Leap Season 2 Episode 4 hits us with some hard truths about relationships and the pain of personal growth.
On the HQ side, the delight of seeing Ian in a committed relationship is short-lived when Rachel realizes they haven't learned to trust her with their work and leaves them again, heartbroken once more.
On the mission side, the traumatic tension between Ben and Addison finally snaps in the wake of riding Neal Russell's headlong tilt at winning back his ex-wife.
There's a bitter irony in the fact the leap that brings Ben and Addison together in their love of Neal Russell and his movies is the one to drive them apart.
There are no winners in this scenario. Neither are there any bad guys.
Yes, Ben's rightfully devastated that Addison moved on.
But also, Addison spent years holding onto hope,...

It takes some true dialogue-forging skill to drop tiny details into conversation without drawing a lot of attention only to become incredibly significant later on.
Quantum Leap Season 2 Episode 2 is rife with finesse as it pilots Ben through a classic catastrophe-aversion leap while providing catch-up on the lives of the rest of the Ql team.
Moreover, it introduces Peter Gadiot's character, Tom Westfall, in a benevolently ambiguous manner. While his appearance bears little likeness to his recent One Piece character, I suspect Tom will be just as full of surprises.
It goes to show how well the show's creators shaped the characters and relationships throughout Quantum Leap Season 1 that bringing a new face onto the team immediately triggers the stranger danger alert in our head.
Nothing about Tom's behavior indicates he is anything but supportive and understanding, but he sets off all sorts of alarms.
Largely, it's the fact...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Quantum Leap Season 2 Episode 2 “Ben & Teller.”] In the first season of Quantum Leap, Ben (Raymond Lee) and Addison (Caitlin Bassett) were kept apart by his jumps and the fact that he lost his memory. Now, in Season 2, the team knows he’s alive (after being missing and presumed dead for three years), but that doesn’t mean the (formerly engaged) couple can just pick up where they left off, even if he does remember everything now. Rather, as the second episode reveals, Addison’s now in a relationship with Tom Westfall (Peter Gadiot), a former special forces soldier and a high-ranking US Army Officer in the realm of Army Intelligence. They’d known each other for years, and she credits him with helping her remember what it is to be alive and happy again after thinking Ben was dead and the darkest two years of her life. “It was very...

Can we all agree that while quantum accelerators are the stuff of science fiction (so far), sometimes Quantum Leap solutions are firmly entrenched in the realm of fantasy?
While I fully admit to breathing a genuine sigh of relief that Ben's Air Force unit survives the landmine on Quantum Leap Season 2 Episode 1 by repeatedly playing a full-body version of the Indiana Jones statue swap, I'm pretty sure that's not how pressure plates work.
But that aside, a solo Ben adventure is the monster of all twists for the return of a show built on the strength of its ensemble.
Of course, he's not actually alone. His leap drops him into a team of military misfits, immersing him in a collective greater than the sum of its parts.
Furthermore, the Ql team is never far from his thoughts. He draws strength and wisdom from his rapidly returning memories of Addison, Magic,...

This article contains spoilers for Quantum Leap season 1 and the premiere of season 2.
Does a Leaper control their leaps? It’s a question that Quantum Leap, both old and new series, seemingly have answers for. In the original show, Sam (Scott Bakula) was leaping because he was conducting a time travel experiment that went, to quote the original narration for the series, “a little caca.” He couldn’t control his leaps and hoped his next leap would be the one that would finally bring him home.
In the first season of the new series, Ben (Raymond Lee) had somewhat planned his leaps in order to get to a place in time where he could save the love of his life, Addison (Caitlin Bassett.) Now though in season 2 Ben is lost in time much like Sam was in the original series… Or was he? And is Ben really lost as well?...

Oh boy.
After a miraculously short hiatus thanks to the forethought of the showrunners and hard work of the production team, NBC's hit sci-fi series, Quantum Leap, returns this week on a new night and at a new time with all-new adventures for Dr. Ben Song and the Ql team.
Quantum Leap Season 2 premieres at 8/7c on Wednesday, October 4, and it's immediately apparent that Ben does not make it home. So what's a time-traveling physicist to do?
The premiere quickly immerses viewers in an action-packed and comedically brilliant A-Team-gone-wrong-esque operation when the top-secret cargo aboard Ben's plane attracts Russian missiles, and they are shot down.
It's 1978, and with a superb supporting guest cast consisting of Melissa Roxburgh, P.J. Byrne, Aaron Abrams, and Francois Arnaud, Ben must trust his gut and skills to see them through the ordeal.
The Ql team is Mia. Ben isn't able to connect with Addison,...
