Clint Eastwood will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Broadcast Film Critics Assn.'s ninth annual Critics' Choice Awards on Saturday at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The group's board of directors also has announced that Peter Weir will receive the Lexus Passion in Film Award at the ceremony, which will be broadcast live by E! Entertainment Television. "Clint Eastwood is a true giant in the world of popular culture," BFCA president Joey Berlin noted in making the announcement. "The range of his films and accomplishments is astounding. Clint has personified whole genres as An Actor. As a filmmaker, he has reinvented them. He has thrilled us, made us laugh and brought us to tears. TORONTO -- Canada's actors union is scheduled to honor William Shatner with an award of excellence in his birthplace Nov. 22. Shatner, best known as Capt. Kirk, from the original "Star Trek", will receive the award in Montreal during the Alliance of Canadian Television and Radio Artists' 60th anniversary celebration. "We are thrilled to recognize William Shatner's illustrious career and 50-year contribution to the film and television industry," Matt Holland, president of ACTRA's Montreal branch, said in a statement Wednesday. After studying at McGill University in Montreal, Shatner started out as An Actor in radio and theater before moving to TV work in New York and later Hollywood. In all, he has starred in about 100 film and TV roles.

Michael Douglas has been chosen to receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 61st annual Golden Globes, the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. said Monday. Unlike other Golden Globe honors, the DeMille Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the entertainment field, is voted on only by the HFPA's board of directors. "It was decided that it was the time to honor Michael Douglas for his distinguished career not only as An Actor but also as a producer," HFPA president Lorenzo Soria said in an interview. "If you look at some of his movies that he produced -- and he produced some of them at a very young age, by the way -- I think there is no question that he has distinguished himself as a producer and as someone who has something to say. And as An Actor, movies like 'Wall Street' speak for themselves. He has shown himself to be a very eclectic actor who can move from comedy to drama to pure entertainment."...
