In 1988, he received the Lasker Award for Public Service in recognition of his support of medical research and public health programs.
He graduated from Yale University, and, after two years in the Army, received a law degree from the University of Virginia.
Born in Paris, where his father headed a subsidiary of E.R. Squibb.
