He was a leading scholar of the US colonial era who helped reinvigorate interest in the founding fathers. He published more than 15 books on early American history. When he was in his 80s, he wrote a best-selling biography of Benjamin Franklin.
After retiring from the faculty of Yale University, he set up a wood and metal shop in his basement, and put together a lathe in his garage.
