Netflix’s original Japanese reality show Love Like a K-Drama combines the drama of reality television with the romance of Korean dramas to create a unique show that is a perfect blend of the two concepts. But does it really work? I’ve spent the last four weeks watching this show despite having no taste for reality TV (thanks to the job), and as a casual cynic, I’d say it doesn’t hit the mark. I will admit, that this is only my second experience watching a dating show (I didn’t choose this life), and it’s left me with the same sour taste as the last one. Although I will admit, it was fun to be biased towards one of the members. The show may be trying to prove that language isn’t a barrier to love, but it seems this “love” is lost in translation. The...

It wouldn’t be a lie if I said I’m overjoyed that Love Like a K-Drama is coming to an end. The show that brings four Japanese actresses to Korea to find love and improve their acting chops is a bit of a failed experiment. As someone who doesn’t quite enjoy the reality dating scene, this show made a little bit more sense considering the mini K-dramas that are made within the show. However, there’s something very fake about the whole thing. Maybe it’s because they’re all actors and we see them go from their organic selves to their actor selves for auditions, not that there’s much of a change. Now, there’s a competition between the women and the men to be chosen for love. Then there’s the competition of the mini K-dramas. I suppose the prospects are exciting, but personally, it...

After watching the previous episodes of Love Like a K-drama, I said I felt a little invested in the show because I was starting to feel for some of the cast members. After seeing the latest episodes, I’m taking that statement back. It almost seems as if, just to add more drama, the showrunners decided to pick a certain couple for the episode, trying to force everyone’s favorite ship to sail (they really were my favorites Tt). Until now, the show has been progressing slowly with little to no drama. This time around, things are heating up, and people are slowly starting to lose their cool. I suppose this is the reason most people watch reality TV—the “drama,” but in these last two episodes, it really comes across as forced.

I suppose Love Like A K-Drama is a direct result of the monstrous global success of Netflix’s Korean dating show “Single’s Inferno.” As your resident skeptic, I will admit that I do feel quite invested in this show; call it collateral damage if you will, and there’s quite the drama to go over in the second set of episodes that just dropped. The premise alone had me confused for the first four episodes until I started to understand what was really happening. Dating show-newbie problems, maybe. I’ve started to understand why people get so absorbed in these things because, you know, I’ve been rooting for a pair, and now they’ve suddenly drifted apart, and I’m here hating on the guy and hurting for the girl. Quite a disappointing turn of events really.
