Chilean horror Hidden in the Woods has found distribution via Artsploitation Films.
The new distribution arm, with a focus on "intriguing, unsettling, provocative, and unpredictable" international films, picked up FrightFest darling Hidden in the Woods for release in 2013. The film has been described as "The bastard child of a Ruggero Deodato/Sam Peckinpah/Gaspar Noé pile-up gestated in the loins of Roberta Findlay" and "a deranged frenzy," it sounds like a ferocious blend of The Woman, The Hills Have Eyes, and Last House on the Left.
From the press release:
"Based on actual events and set in the woods of an Appalachian-like Chile, the tale follows the hellacious life of two young sisters, Ana (Siboney Lo) and Any (Carolina Escobar), who are imprisoned by their sexually abusive father, who years past had killed their mother. Along with their malformed brother Manuel (José Hernandez), they eventually escape but find existence on the run just as perilous.

Hidden In The Woods
Stars: Siboney Lo, Carolina Escobar, Daniel Antivilo, Jose Hernandez, Serge Francois Soto | Written and Directed by Patricio Valladares
Apparently based on true events, Hidden in the Woods is another backwoods hillbilly tale, this time lensed in Chile, giving it that extra Spanish exploitation flavour. And exploit it does – exploiting the female cast and the audience watching!
The film tells the story of two sisters, Ana and Anny and Anny, raised in forest isolation by their abusive, drug-dealing, maniac of a father after he kills their mother for being a “whore”. Subjected to rape and physical abuse (which leads to Anny giving birth to her father’s physically deformed child, Manuel, in one of the more gruesome, and loathsome, scenes in the film) the pair finally find freedom from their father when, after chainsawing two cops to death, he is arrested at a bus terminal waiting for drug kingpin Costello’s men.

Hidden In the Woods

Chile, 2012
What exactly consists of a good groundhouse picture? Which conceivable, perceptible elements are sufficient for one movie fan, presumably one owing some familiarity in the genre, to conclude that groundhouse movie ‘a’ was swell, whereas movie grondhouse ‘b’ was not. Is the genre itself not supposed to give birth to films that, if assessed along the typically recognized guidelines (good acting, good story, good directing, good special effects provided said effects are present), are by and large bad? That is partly their charm, a charm virtually no other genre can claim. This year’s Fantasia International Film Festival lineup reserved some special projects for such fans. One was Michael Biehn’s directorial debut, The Victim, a film this movie reviewer found dreadful (for an altogether different take, here is Michael Ryan’s review and...

Hidden in the Woods aka En Las Afueras de la Ciudad is a horror film currently in post-production. This film was shot in fourteen days within Chile and director Patricio Valladares (Toro Loco) helmed this production, as director. Strangely, the Spanish title translates to In the Outskirts of the City, according to this part time Spanish speaker, but different territories generally receive different titles e.g. North America.
This independent horror production involves two sisters, who confront their father over issues of abuse. Dysfunction runs in the family, as later they must face their Uncle, a ruthless drug-dealer. Have a read of the early synopsis below and view the first English poster for the film, seen left.

NEW YORK -- Simultaneously underdeveloped and overcooked, this Chilean melodrama depicting the tragic consequences resulting from an adulterous love triangle attempts to have the portentous weight of a biblical allegory. While its more extreme elements are less than convincing, "El Leyton" does boast an undeniable exoticism that makes its all-too-familiar elements more palatable. This feature from director Gonzalo Justiniano ("B-Happy") is receiving its U.S. theatrical premiere at New York's Quad Cinema.
The tale is told in flashback form, beginning with the return of the bedraggled, one-eyed title character to his rural seaside village. Leyton (Juan Pablo Saez), begging the villagers' forgiveness, proceeds to tell his story and attempt to provide justification for his actions.
It seems that he was partners with his best friend Modesto (Luis Wigdorsky) in a fishing business, when the latter fell in love with and married the beautiful and demure Marta (Siboney Lo). Modesto, rough-hewed and inexperienced in love, proves a less-than-exciting husband for his wife, who soon enters a depressed and sexually deprived state. Enter Leyton, the village bon vivant and playboy, who decides to take advantage of the situation by seducing the initially resistant but ultimately agreeable Marta.
Needless to say, the liaison, which becomes less than a secret to the rest of the community, eventually becomes known to the outraged Modesto, who proves to be less of a patsy than previously assumed by the reckless Leyton.
Ultimately, there's little to distinguish this tale from the countless similar efforts that have preceded it, other than the exoticism of its setting. The performers do manage to bring some life to their characters: Saez makes Leyton strangely likable despite his often violently aggressive behavior, Wigdorsky brings some odd and intriguing grace notes to his portrayal of the hapless but ultimately violent Modesto, and Lo well delineates Marta's gradual sexual awakening.
