Son of Austrian opera singer Hans Robert, Ernest Roberts began his
stage career in Germany and Vienna under the direction of Otto
Preminger. In 1937 he emigrated to England, later moving to the US.
After working on a variety of jobs in New York, including that of
private secretary to actor Walter Slezak, he attempted (together with
his then wife Lisl Valetti) to build a career in films in Hollywood,
unfortunately without success. While still in New York, he later wrote
advertising copies and tried his hand at stage productions.
In the summer of 1950 he returned to Europe and worked for many years
as a journalist for German and international newspapers.
