Brit Marling is used to juggling multiple roles on the set of her projects, but “A Murder at the End of the World” marked the first time she sat on the director’s chair.
The actress, writer and now director helmed three out of the seven episodes in the FX limited series, which she also cocreated with her longtime filmmaking collaborator Zal Batmanglij. The job had been on her radar since working on the Netflix cult classic “The Oa,” but Marling said taking on a smaller acting role on “Murder” finally gave her the time to take it on.
“Our worlds are often very ambitious, a little bit fantasy or a little bit sci-fi … everything has a newness to it that requires a lot of figuring out at every department level,” Marling told TheWrap. “[I knew] that if I wanted to really direct in the way I want to do it, I...

Toward the end of “A Murder at the End of the World,” Ziba (Pegah Ferydoni), one of the guests staying at a billionaire’s Icelandic bunker, sums up the horror of the A.I. technology that the tech giant whose retreat they’re attending has created. Ray, the name given to the humanized smart computer overseeing every guest’s whim, is “an us, without feeling.” The line is not simply meant to highlight the danger of the soullessness of artificial intelligence— how, as many critics of theChat Gpt era would say, advanced technology can never replicate our ineffable humanity, no matter how impressively it spits things out of its data churner.
The real terror is the “us” part. If A.I. takes our data and reflects ourselves back to us, it is a mirror of an often disfigured society.
Countless films and TV shows have reckoned with the idea of...

Snow blankets the Yellowstone Ranch as Paramount+’s 1923 season one episode seven begins. The season’s penultimate episode opens with Jack (Darren Mann) giving Elizabeth (Michelle Randolph) a good morning kiss and promising to be careful.
Jacob (Harrison Ford) is getting around better, and he briefly comes inside to warm his hands by the fire. He promises Cara (Helen Mirren) they’ll be back by supper, and Cara responds, “Just come back.”
Outside, the cowboys saddle up and head out with Jacob in the lead.
In town, the snow makes it difficult for motorcars to get around, but horses don’t have any problem. Three sheriff vehicles fall into place behind Jacob and his men as they head to Banner’s new home (courtesy of Donald Whitfield).

The Yellowstone universe is expanding yet again, this time with another generation of Duttons in the 1940s. On the heels of 1883 and 1923, Taylor Sheridan’s new Yellowstone prequel 1944 is officially in the works. And once again, fans should expect to see new Dutton faces when the official cast list is revealed.
Darren Mann as Jack and Michelle Randolph as Elizabeth | Christopher Saunders/Paramount+ The ‘Yellowstone’ prequels are introducing fans to every Dutton ranching generation
Yellowstone fans met the first generation of Duttons in the limited series 1883, which starred Tim McGraw and Faith Hill as James and Margaret Dutton. Those episodes told the story of how they traveled the Oregon Trail with their children — Elsa (Isabel May) and John (Audie Rick) — and how they chose the land in Montana that would eventually become the Dutton Ranch in Yellowstone.
The prequel 1923 introduced the next generation of Duttons after James and Margaret’s passing.

Paramount+’s 1923 season one episode six begins by catching up with Teonna (Aminah Nieves) who’s on the run after murdering two abusive nuns and escaping the boarding school. Teonna’s now traveling with Hank (Michael Greyeyes) and they’ve made it to his small home, along with his flock of sheep.
Hank thinks Teonna needs a boy’s name as part of her disguise and she suggests Hank Jr. since that’s what the white men do. Hank prefers Joe and Teonna agrees.
Teonna changes into Hank’s son’s clothes and they burn everything she brought with her from the U.S. School for Native Americans. That is, except for the Bible. Hank fears the white man’s God will turn them to salt if they anger him.

Paramount+’s 1923 returns from a one-month break with season one episode five, “Ghost of Zebrina,” premiering on February 5, 2023. But before we jump into the recap, a quick congrats to the cast and crew for earning a second season order. 1923’s an incredibly entertaining addition to the Yellowstone world and I for one can’t wait to see where Taylor Sheridan takes the story in season two.
And now on with the recap of an extended episode five. To make it easier to track, this recap’s split into three parts: events in Montana, events involving the boarding school, and Spencer and Alex’s journey.
Episode five begins with Cara (Helen Mirren) visiting the post office, anxiously awaiting news from Spencer. She confesses she likes to make the...
