Christina's great uncle, Hinton Rowan Helper, played a notable role in the America anti-slavery movement when he published his "Compendium of the Impending Crisis of the South" in 1857. It was used as campaign material and distributed by the Republican party in the presidential election of 1860. This earned him a spot in the Lincoln administration.
