Israa Al-Kamali is a multi-award-winning director, screenwriter, and producer based in Los Angeles, California.
Al-Kamali's feature film script "The Anxious Place" is a Quarterfinalist at The Academy (The Oscar's) Screenwriting Fellowship 2023, the script was one of only 364 entries to emerge from the 5,599 screenplays submitted from around the world. It also placed as a Quarterfinalist in Los Angeles International Screenplay Awards (2023), San Francisco International Screenwriting & Cinema (2022), an honorable mention in Big Apple Film Festival Agents and Managers Networking Lab (2023), and a finalist in Ouchy Film Awards in Switzerland (2023).
Her short film "Instincts" won best Indie short film, best horror, and received honorable mentions at film festivals in the United States. It was an official selection at Chicago Underground Film Festival (30th edition), which is the longest running film festival in the world, Burbank International Film Festival (15th edition), Santa Monica International Film Festival (18th edition), The Valley Film Festival (23rd edition), and more. Al-Kamali was the first Iraqi woman filmmaker to be selected at some of these festivals.
Al-Kamali's work has been screened at some of the most popular cinemas in Hollywood such as AMC 16 in the heart of the world's media city in Burbank, North Hollywood's Laemmle theater, and LA Live Regal theater.
In addition to her filmmaking work, Al-Kamali Co-Founded the Independent Iraqi Film Festival in 2020, the first independent film festival of its kind. The festival was featured in various international platforms such as GQ Magazine, Al-Jazeera, BBC, etc. and received wide success and appreciation.
