They were less than 30 seconds away. The Americans were about to romp into the round of 16 at the World Cup, about to walk off with their first come-from-behind win at soccer's showcase. About to advance with a game to spare. About to win consecutive World Cup games for the first time since 1930. But they wilted in the Amazon heat and humidity. Silvestre Varela's goal on a diving header off Cristiano Ronaldo's cross 4½ minutes into five minutes of stoppage time gave Portugal a 2-2 tie Sunday on an exhausting night in the rainforest capital. Clint Dempsey scored the goal to put the U.S. men’s soccer team ahead of Portugal late in the second half of their World Cup game Sunday night.
Clint Dempsey Scores Against Portugal
With less than 10 minutes to go in the game with the U.S. tied 1-1 with Portugal, a shot by Michael Bradley was deflected out wide to Graham Zusi, who crossed the ball in front of the goal mouth, finding Dempsey, who chested the ball into the back of the net.
Dempsey’s goal in the 81st minute of play made it seem almost certain that the U.S. would get the three points and a trip into the next round of the World Cup. Deep into stoppage time, however, Portugal found a tying goal. After Bradley gave the ball away in the U.S. squad’s defensive half, Cristiano Ronaldo – who’d largely been ineffective...

The United States national soccer team beat Ghana in their first game in the group round of the 2014 World Cup Monday night.
USA Beats Ghana At World Cup
U.S. came out onto the field in Brazil Monday determined not to let Ghana, who has knocked them out of the last two World Cups, get another win off of them. With less than a minute into the game, star forward Clint Dempsey dribbled through the left side of the penalty box and slid the ball inside the far post of the net for his squad’s first goal of the tournament.
With the one goal lead, the U.S. was able to settle into a possession game as Ghana fought to regain momentum. Eventually, the Ghanaians had their first legitimate chance to score, but were denied by American keeper Tim Howard, who sprinted off his line to make the save.
