Adam Petlin, who joined Fox News weeks after its debut in 1996 and was longtime head of Chicago bureau operations, died on Dec. 23 after a long illness. He was 58.
Petlin was one of the first six field photographers hired for the then-fledging news operation in August 1996. He was quickly promoted to supervisory posts and became part of the core team that built the channel into a cable powerhouse.
Petlin led the first Fox News camera crew to reach the scene at the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. His other career highlights included a trip to Antarctica and the South Pole with former Apollo program astronaut Jim Lovell.
“He was an integral part of the field and production team and a gifted still and television photographer,” Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott wrote in a memo to employees sent on Dec. 24. Scott called Petlin “a natural leader” and “a Fox News original.

Fox Weather wants to blow through your devices.
The Fox Corp. climate-news service, which got its start as a streaming app when it launched in October of last year, is not so quietly winding its way into as many platforms as it can. On Thursday, Fox Corp. and smart-tv manufacturer Vizio unveiled an expanded distribution agreement that puts Fox Weather on Vizio WatchFree+ alongside existing Fox ad-supported channels. Since its debut the app has been downloaded more than two million times.
“We grew the Fox Weather ecosystem,” says Sharri Berg, who leads Fox Weather as well as news and operations for the parent company’s TV stations. “We started as a mobile app with a light linear network on it.” Over the course of the past several months, Fox Weather has launched on venues such as Roku and Amazon; on local Fox station digi-nets: and even on the weekend schedule of the Fox Business Network.

There’s a new wind blowing through the building that houses Fox News Channel.
Amy Freeze and Craig Herrera spent a recent weekday afternoon in a TV studio at the company’s New York headquarters rehearsing, but not for a new opinion program or roundtable show, but for a streamcast focused on the most-up-to-date news about the weather. They talked about oil spills, wildfires and abrupt changes in temperature. At one point, the duo discussed the Biden administration’s support of wind power, noting that it would likely help Americans recover more quickly from power outages. A chyron imposed on a screen that captured their exchange read: “Biden administration gives wind farms a boost.” Sean Hannity might be seen taking issue with a Biden-backed environmental policy, but Freeze and Herrera just have a report to give. All the duo’s work took place in a facility that once served as...
