Uwe Barth
High school diploma. University studies, graduation as physicist. Military service NVA.
Head of department at the State Environmental Office in Erfurt.
In 1986, Barth became a member of the LDPD. During reunification, he was one of the co-founders of Jungliberale Aktion Thüringen, the liberal youth organization in Thuringia. After initially being elected deputy chairman in 2002, Barth became state chairman of the Thuringian FDP on November 29, 2003. From 2003 to 2013, he was a member of the FDP's federal executive committee.
Barth was the FDP's top candidate for the 2004 state election in Thuringia, in which, however, the FDP achieved only 3.6% and thus did not enter the state parliament.
After the 2005 federal election, Barth became a member of the German Bundestag via the FDP's state list. Here, he has since been chairman of the parliamentary group's working group VI for innovation, social policy and culture. He was also spokesman for the FDP parliamentary group on higher education. He received 5.9% of the vote in the Gera - Jena - Saale-Holzland-Kreis Bundestag constituency. He was a member of the German Bundestag until September 27, 2009.
Barth was once again the FDP's top candidate in the 2009 state elections in Thuringia. For the first time in 15 years, the party overcame the five-percent hurdle; it received 7.6 % of the vote and thus won seven state parliament seats. In September 2009, Barth was elected chairman of the FDP's state parliamentary group. Since the extraordinary federal party conference of the FDP in December 2013, he has been one of three deputies to the federal chairman Christian Lindner, together with Wolfgang Kubicki and Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann.
The 2014 state election saw the Thuringian FDP leave the state parliament again, which meant that Barth, who had been his party's top candidate for the third time, also lost his seat. At the state party conference on November 22, 2014, he declined to stand for re-election as state chairman. Franka Hitzing became the new state chairwoman.
At the federal party conference on May 15, 2015 in Berlin, he renounced a candidacy as deputy federal chairman. He was succeeded by Katja Suding.
