The BBC’s first disinformation correspondent has apparently been caught in a lie.
Marianna Spring, one of the BBC’s fastest-rising stars, reportedly embellished the truth on her resume while applying for a job before she joined the broadcaster in 2018.
The New European, a British newspaper, has seen emails between Spring and Natalia Antelava, the editor-in-chief of U.S. publication Coda Story.
Spring was looking for work as a Moscow stringer and is reported to have said on her resume that she worked alongside BBC Eastern Europe correspondent Sarah Rainsford.
Her CV said: “June 2018: Reported on International News during the World Cup, specifically the perception of Russia, with BBC correspondent Sarah Rainsford.”
Antelava, a former BBC journalist, reportedly checked the claim with Rainsford, who revealed that she had only met Spring in social situations.
Spring apologized for the “awful misjudgement,” according to the emails seen by New European journalist Tim Walker.

A female BBC journalist has discovered that she receives more than 80% of all the online abuse received by the entire corporation.
Marianna Spring, the BBC’s first disinformation and social media correspondent, tells The Times newspaper that, during the first six months of this year alone, she received more than 11,771 personal slurs. She tells the newspaper: “It’s really normal to really hate me.”
Such abuse spiked earlier this year following Spring’s appearance in a BBC documentary, measuring the increase in hate and disinformation on Twitter following Elon Musk’s takeover. Musk tweeted: “Sorry for turning Twitter from nurturing paradise into a place that has… trolls.”
Despite receiving threatening and hostile messages on a daily basis, Spring tells The Times she has to consider whether or not to block people: “I think there’s something about blocking people that means they can be, like, ‘Oh, you’re not open to a conversation.

Grimsby Town Football Club may not be owned by Hollywood superstars like Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney but they’re looking to rival the duo’s Wrexham AFC on TV screens.
Propagate International, the distribution division of Ben Silverman and Howard T. Owens’ production company, has taken the global rights to All Town Aren’t We, a three-part docuseries about the British football club.
The doc, which is produced by Shush Films, will cover the team’s 2021-2022 season, where they beat Wrexham in the semi-finals of the playoffs to achieve an instant return to the Football League.
While the team only finished sixth in the National League that season, they defeated Notts County in the quarter finals and Reynolds and McElhenney’s Wrexham on their way to beating Solihull Moors to win promotion to League Two.

Two inmates from the Mississippi Raymond Detention Center were found missing on Monday. They were identified as Joseph Spring and Michael Lewis and law enforcement detected this break out during a headcount when they could not locate the two men. It is still unclear how they were able to escape, but it is possible they escaped through an air duct and then climbed the fence.
Spring still has not been located and there is currently a search underway to find him. Sheriff Tyree Jones has been updating the case on Twitter. The people in the nearby area were notified and asked to keep an eye out for any suspicious activity that could be related.
Update: Escaped detainee, Michael Lewis-31 is back in custody. He was captured moments ago by Hcso Deputies searching the area of Seven Springs Rd. and Springridge Rd. He faces additional escape charges. The search is still ongoing for Joseph Spring.

Troll clicks count, too – and this wisdom is not lost on Marianna Spring, the BBC’s Disinformation and Social Media Correspondent, who bid “welcome” to the haters delivering “misogynistic slurs” and other feedback to her launch video for BBC Verify.
“We’re a team of investigative journalists here at the BBC,” Spring said in a Monday video explaining the government-funded broadcaster’s new fact-checking venture. “But we’re also a new brand and we are a physical location above the newsroom in London. The point of the team is to verify video, to fact-check, to counter disinformation and to analyze really complex stories, so we can get to the truth of what’s going on.”
The trolling in response to this – including misogynistic slurs, threatening and hateful messages – are just more proof of why investigating this is so important.
Welcome trolls and stay tuned for my latest Radio 4 podcast, more upcoming investigations – and Undercover Voters.

Legendary talk show host Jerry Springer has died at age 79. Springer's eponymous "Jerry Springer" show became a sensation in the 1990s, often criticized and praised in equal measure for bringing taboo topics to daytime TV. In a statement to Popsugar, Springer's family confirmed that the host died "peacefully" at home in suburban Chicago.
"Jerry's ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried whether that was politics, broadcasting or just joking with people on the street who wanted a photo or a word," the family's spokesperson said. "He's irreplaceable and his loss hurts immensely, but memories of his intellect, heart, and humor will live on."
Before his time as talk show royalty, Springer was a lawyer and politician. He had an unsuccessful congressional bid in 1970 but was elected to the Cincinnati City Council in 1971. In 1977, he was chosen by the council to...
