What starts as a pleasant walking simulator between a brother and his older sister, swiftly turns into the most eerie version of a Hansel and Gretel story that you’ll ever come across. Initially released in April of 2023 across all major platforms, the game is now available on Xbox Game Pass. For us horror fans, Bramble is the gift that keeps giving. As stated before, the game starts with an immense fairytale feel. However, this game quickly turns dark and only gets darker from there. Just when you start to think surely you have seen it all, this game delivers a few more gut punches to leave you gasping in disbelief. I even found myself asking the question, “Is this even allowed in an M-rated game?”

The spotlight will be shining both on what’s happening in Chinese animation right now and on what is about to emerge from the genre as the 25th Shanghai International Film Festival, which opened Friday, plays out until June 18.
The festival’s main Golden Goblet Awards have lined up five films from five countries for its Animation Film section, and they include the hotly anticipated Master Zhong from Chinese streamer iQiYi. The film takes its place in the competition alongside the Iran-Turkey co-production Dolphin Boy (directed by Mohammad Kheirandish), Hungary’s Four Souls Of Coyote (Aron Gauder), Gonta: The Story Of The Two-Named Dog In The Fukushima Disaster (Akio Nishizawa) from Japan and the Belgium-France-Spain effort The Inseparables (Jérémie Degruson).

With its two adorable bears, this formulaic kids’ tale tells its environmentally conscious story with plenty of warmth but few surprises
The ninth feature in a hugely popular Chinese animated series directed by Lin Yongchang and Shao Heqi, Boonie Bears: Guardian Code is also the franchise’s highest-grossing film, second behind The Wandering Earth 2 as the biggest Chinese film of 2023 so far. With its two main characters Bramble and Briar, adorable bears who were abandoned by their mother in a forest fire, this environmentally conscious adventure is an entertaining, if rather formulaic, ride.
For lovers of cute animals, the CGI designs of the brothers are quite lovely and detailed, though not exactly distinctive. Goofy and optimistic Bramble believes that their mother is out there searching for them, but Briar holds no such hope. However, a chance encounter with Charlotte, an aspiring scientist, promises a new clue that would lead...

There were two bigger box office hits in China over the Lunar New Year, but the returns enjoyed by Boonie Bears: Guardian Code may, in hindsight, turn out to be the result that actually points to an emerging trend in Chinese cinema.
The country’s animation industry is certainly hoping so.
In collecting an estimated $136 million (Rmb 924 million) over its eight-day festive-season run, the ninth installment of the Boonie Bears franchise found itself tucked in behind two blockbusters: veteran helmer Zhang Yimou’s period thriller Full River Red, collector of an estimated $465 million (Rmb 3.16 billion), and Frank Guo’s sci-fi sequel The Wandering Earth 2 with $378 million (Rmb 2.57 billion).
But the bigger picture is how the film held its own against two such high-profile releases on its way to a total of more than $220 million (Rmb 1.5 billion), and amid reports that it had been sold to a slew of international markets,...

Chinese studio Fantawild Animation unveiled a slew of sales deals at Hong Kong’s Filmart content market Monday for the latest hit in its long-running Boonie Bears franchise. Boonie Bears: Guardian Code, the ninth film in the franchise, which earned $220 million during China’s Lunar New Year holiday in January, has closed theatrical deals for Canada (Cinemaguzzo), France (Factoris), the U.K. (Media Pioneers & Factoris), Cis (Prime Time Media), Spain (Melies), Turkey (Bir film), Middle East (Phoenicia), sub-Saharan Africa (Red head Global), and Singapore and Malaysia (MM2).
“Distributors have closed with us much earlier than expected with this film,” said Daniel Bort, Fantawild’s head of international. “We were able to presell at AFM with only a poster, not even images available. We are still closing deals even now, as we have yet to release the English version, which is an important factor in international localization. Buyers expect that our films...
