Exclusive: Michael Stahl-David (Cloverfield), Scottie Thompson (Crown Vic) and Michael Weston (Home Before Dark) are in production in Ohio on Down to the Felt, an indie dark comedy with action elements from filmmaker Jon Osbeck. The trio joins a cast that also includes Jo-Ann Robinson and Cullen Douglas.
Written and produced by Dino Tripodis, Ralph Scott, and Osbeck, Down to the Felt tells the story of Paul (Stahl-David), a down-on-his-luck compulsive gambler who makes a desperate deal with a psychopathic hitman (Weston) to kill him in two weeks. But then he meets Erica (Thompson), a mystery woman, and life suddenly starts dealing him aces.
Previously co-directing the award-winning military drama Minus One, Osbeck is also producing Down to the Felt through his production shingle Big Deal Pictures, alongside Douglas.
Stated Osbeck, “It’s truly an embarrassment of riches to be working with both Michaels and Scottie. Their roles all demand...

When Paul (Dino Tripodis) moves to the small town of Copperton, Ohio, with his teenage daughter Christine (Sharon Klopfenstein), he’s hoping to be able to live the quiet life. A former employee of the Chicago Tribune, he buys up local newspaper The Chronicle and hires Shannon (Shanna Thomas), a shapely redhead who turns up on his doorstep claiming, no more convincingly, to have walked away from a job at the New York Times. Their first case concerns the mysterious death of local girl Mary, an accomplished student who had fallen for an outsider and planned to move away to go to college with him. Neither journalist is satisfied with the dismissive way the case is handled. There is a relaxed attitude to death here reminiscent of that in the village of Sandford in Hot Fuzz, though we are in the US South, and something differently sinister is afoot.
It centres on.
It centres on.

Back in the early 90s Heartland of Darkness, or Blood Church as it was titled then, was one of those films my friends and I all wanted to see, but never seemed to materialize. We read snippets about it in magazines, we knew Linnea Quigley was in it and the plot sounded cool. But for all we kept hearing the only thing that ever emerged was a half hour’s worth of workprint. Now after thirty years on the shelf they’ve finished post-production, added in a few digital effects and it’s getting released by Visual Vengeance. I’m sure one of the extras on the Blu-ray will be a documentary explaining just what happened…
Heartland of Darkness opens with a man fleeing for his life through the woods.
