Madrid, Feb 28 (Ians) Osasuna entertain Athletic Club Bilbao in the first leg of the first semi-final of the Copa del Rey knockout competition in their El Sadar Stadium on Wednesday night.
The game will be played in front of a packed house, with the home side who have never won the cup looking to take a step towards their first final since 2005.
Athletic Club are looking to end a 39-year period without winning the cup, after qualifying for and losing finals in 2009, 2012, 2015, 2020 and 2021 although the last two matches were both played in April 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a Xinhua report said.
The two sides are next to each other in La Liga, with Osasuna currently eighth, while Athletic lie ninth, just a point below them. Osasuna will go into the game with their morale sky high after a 3-2 win away to Sevilla whom they defeated in the quarter-final on Sunday night.

Madrid (Spain), Dec 30 (Ians) Atletico Madrid moved back into the top four in La Liga with a 2-0 win at home to bottom-of-the-table Elche as they returned to action after the five-week World Cup break.
Goals from Joao Felix and Alvaro Morata gave Atletico three points against a rival that has not won all season with just four points but who gave Diego Simeone’s side plenty of problems on Thursday night.
Elche were looking comfortable in the first half until the last minute when Gonzalo Verdu was shown a direct red card for bringing down Morata on the edge of the area, with the Var advising that he had frustrated a clear scoring chance.
Things were evened up seven minutes after the break when Mario Hermoso was sent off for a second yellow card, but in the 55th minute, Antoine Griezmann and Joao Felix combined for the latter to score a simple finish.

With the surprising victory, Morocco became the only African and Arab nation to reach the quarterfinals in Qatar.
Spanish team members and fans were devastated at the end of the shootout at the Education City Stadium in the Qatari capital when their team failed to convert even one shot from the spot — Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou saved efforts by Carlos Soler and Sergio Busquets while Pablo Sarabia struck the post.
In contrast, Abdelhamid Sabiri and Hakim Ziyech scored theirs and though Badr Benoun was thwarted by Unai Simon, Achraf Hakimi sealed a maiden entry in the World Cup quarterfinals for Morocco when he sent Spain’s keeper the wrong way.

Madrid, Oct 24 (Ians) Fc Barcelona remain three points behind Real Madrid at the top of La Liga after a 4-0 win at home to Athletic Bilbao on Sunday night.
One of Barca’s best performances of the season coincided with Bilbao’s worst as Barca led 3-0 at the break thanks to Ousmane Dembele’s 12th-minute header, followed by Sergi Roberto’s 18th-minute shot, which took a slight deflection to lift it over Athletic keeper Unai Simon.
Robert Lewandowski added a third in the 22nd minute and Bilbao weren’t helped by Ander Herrera limping off injured, reports Xinhua.
Herrera’s replacement Dani Garcia also had to go off injured in what was a relatively tepid second half which saw Ferran Torres score Barca’s fourth following a pass from Dembele.
Atletico Madrid moved third after a 2-1 win away to Real Betis thanks to two goals from Antoine Griezmann.

Madrid, Oct 10 (Ians) Fc Barcelona had to withstand a second half fightback at home to Celta Vigo to cling on for a narrow 1-0 win in the Camp Nou on Sunday in the eighth round match of La Liga.
Barca controlled the first half completely, with Gavi and Pedro running the midfield, and it was no surprise when Gavi set Pedro up to score from close range in the 17th minute.
Everything changed after the break, with Celta seeing a goal ruled out for a close offside, while Marc-Andre ter Stegen produced two excellent saves to deny Iago Aspas and Oscar.
Barca will have to improve considerably if they are to beat Inter Milan in the Champions League ahead of next weekend’s El Clasico against Real Madrid, reports Xinhua.

Madrid (Spain), Sep 17 (Ians) Spain coach Luis Enrique brought in two new faces when he named his squad for the forthcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Switzerland and Portugal on Friday.
Betis striker Borja Iglesias and Athletic Club Bilbao winger Nico Williams were both included in the 25-man squad, which is also the last squad Enrique will give before naming his final group to the World Cup finals in Qatar.
“This would be the list if the World Cup was to start tomorrow, no doubt about it. I always take the players that I consider to be the best,” Enrique told a press conference.
Iglesias gets his call-up after scoring 19 goals last season for Betis and starting this season with four goals in five appearances, while 20-year-old Williams is a surprise call-up but has impressed with his pace and ability to open up the pitch in the year and a...
