The success of our Submit Your Film Initiative continued this year in the same pace, as we received more than 80 submissions from all over Asia, including a number of Asian-American titles, with the features' submissions this year being close to the one of shorts. As such, we would like to thank all the filmmakers who submitted their work and we hope that they continue to do so for many years to come and also to hint on a very significant update regarding the initiative and the ‘future' of the films submitted, which will announce at the beginning of 2023.
At the same time, we also felt the need to celebrate this initiative by listing the movies we considered the best. Without further ado, here are the best #SubmitYourFilm Movies of 2023, in random order..

Chamber pieces are a strange cinematic genre. As is often the case with one-location films, it might be tempting to say that the genre belongs more in theatre than it does cinema, but when you begin to measure the challenge of making a setting as interesting as the characters inhabiting it, a rather high bar is set. The filmmakers behind “Spaces Underlined” have grappled with that challenge three times over in an anthology of short stories, each a two-hander confined to different types of bedroom: first, a place of childhood tranquility, then a filthy college dormroom, and finally, a luxury hotel room. Does each tale meet the intimate challenge ahead of them? Despite some varying degrees of success, the answer is fortunately yes.

Roufy Nasution is a director that we have repeatedly dealt with his short films in the past, even including them in our best of lists. This time, however, he takes the seat of the scriptwriter, while leaving the direction to Irvan Achmad and Calista Aradea, in a short that revolves around badminton.

Sofia and Eky are two friends who have been playing badminton for years, with the latter always emerging as a winner. This time, however, they decide to up the stakes with a bet. Not for money, however, since Eky wants to pinch Sofia's breasts if he wins, and she wants him to pee in front of the classroom if she wins. Surprisingly, they both agree, even if Sofia considers the whole thing a harassment, and the game begins.

With regard to the concept of movies as a way to approach and better understand a subject, we, as the audience, certainly see the world through a different lens (pun intended) after having followed the story or having been through the same journey as the characters. However, in many ways, the same principle should also be applied to the creator(s) of the feature, because while the idea for the story, the characters and the aesthetics may have laid the theoretical foundation for it, the filming process often brings new experiences and knowledge to the surface, at times to an extent which changes the feature as a whole. In his feature debut “The Boy With Moving Image” Indonesian director Roufy Nasution puts this idea at the center of the story revolving around a young director whose encounter with a woman changes his perspective on his craft and on life itself.

Very rarely does the title of a film capture its narrative so accurately as in the case of “Stranger by Fiction”, a short that is weird, filled with humor and in an audiovisual style that seems to have taken some loans from Wes Anderson.

As we learn through narration, Bonar, a filmmaker from Jakarta, has arrived at a hotel at Pelabuhan Ratu beach to search for inspiration about his new film. On the third day, however, when he returns to his room, he realizes that his laptop has been stolen. Thinking the housekeeper is the perpetrator, he asks the ever-smiling receptionist about what happened, but to his surprise, he can only speak in Sundanese, with the same applying to the rest of the guests and staff, who also seem to find something very funny in this situation.
