- I don't care about the political affiliation of Chuck Norris. I can only say that he was my idol as an action hero when I was a teenager and that it was a real pleasure to make his acquaintance. In the mid 80's Chuck was on top and I was just ecstatic and felt privileged to be able to work with him.
- Most professional, cool, smart, a man's man; just a few words to describe Robert Davi. It was one of my nicest acting experiences working with him and I received the biggest compliment ever. "Bernhard, you remind me of a young Oskar Werner". I was speechless. Aside from being an accomplished singer, most people don't know that Robert has a real funny side. He does hilarious impressions which made me blow out a soft drink through my nose.
- Manila in the 80's was known for all the go-go bars and when I saw Willem Dafoe sitting at the bar in one of the clubs called Superstar I could hardly believe my eyes. At that time he was really just known for Streets of Fire and To Live and Die in L.A. I found him to be a very intellectual person showing great interest in my personal life and background... and I'll never forget his devilish grin.
- When I spent the day with Donald Pleasence I always had a feeling that he should be my grandfather. Such a warm and charming gentleman. In my book he's one of the most under appreciated, but well known actors ever. I felt like conversing with Royalty.
- Richard Harris was a firecracker and an encyclopedia of crazy stories. He had a rough edge, but not in an unpleasant way. I really liked him right away and I think he liked me too... at least that is what he said.
- It's very strange, but I'm probably one of the very few people who talked to Susan Sarandon while she was breast feeding (Eva). To say the very least, I was sweating bullets and felt quite embarrassed at the time, even though it's the most natural and wonderful thing in the world to see mother and child in such an intimate moment .
- I think being able to act comes naturally. There are certainly some things that you can learn, but in all reality, either you got the ability or you don't. I think Robert Mitchum once explained it best when he said; it's like trying to learn how to be tall. The most basic and optimal advice I can give is to know your lines and show up on time.
- Being an actor in action films is a wonderful thing as you will visit unusual and exotic places and participate in activities like firing unusual firearms or fly in helicopters; just doing stuff that the average person will never be able to experience.
- When being on a movie set, there are two things you have to get used to; constantly hurry up and then wait.
- Hamburger Hill (1987) had one of the worst working conditions of any film sets I ever worked on. The 1986 Pacific typhoon season was particularly bad and the Philippines had been hit by Typhoon Peggy in July of that year and brought massive amounts of rainfall with it. The day after the storm had dissipated we arrived on the set and exited the coaster were almost immediately knee-deep in mud. It was a complete mess.
