Ujjwal Kumar (born 14 December 1992) is an Indian percussionist and designer from Delhi, India. He is a self-taught Ghatam artist known for his unique "Ghatam Mixes".
Ujjwal Kumar was born in Muzaffarpur, in the Indian state of Bihar and spent his childhood with his grandparents. Ujjwal's talent was spotted by his music teacher in his school in Muzaffarpur, tapping his fingers on surfaces like tables and doors to produce beats. His teacher then taught him to play the Pump organ, Maraca, and the Conga.
Ujjwal moved to Delhi to live with his mother when he was 11. Ujjwal's mother dreamt of watching him play the Tabla on the stage while wearing a traditional Indian Kurta. As a result, Ujjwal started learning the Tabla formally from a tutor and continued for four years. During that, he also learnt the guitar and the Keyboard instrument. In his quest to impress a girl who liked drummers, Ujjwal sold his personal computer to purchase a drum kit. He taught himself to play the drums by watching YouTube tutorials in a public Internet café. To avoid complaints about the drumming from the residents in his housing complex, he rented a basement to practice. To pay the rent of this place and hone his talent, he launched a music school and taught 150 students as an 18-year-old school student.
Ujjwal completed his Management Programme at IIM Kozhikode. He also holds a Diploma in Design Process from the National Institute of Fashion Technology.
Since 2019 Ujjwal Kumar has been performing in concerts, shows, college festivals, gatherings and social media platforms such as Instagram and YouTube. Ujjwal is famous for creating "Ghatam Mixes" with contemporary songs that have garnered him 25 million views across Youtube and Instagram. He is known for blending the sound of the Ghatam and the Handpan to create meditative-trance music. Along with the Ghatam and Handpan, Ujjwal also plays other instruments such as Cajón, djembe, Udu, Bongo drum, Goblet drum, daf, Tambourine, Synthesizer, piano, guitar, ukulele, sitar, Recorder (musical instrument), Harmonica, and flute.
"Sounds of India" is a series of concerts conceptualized by Ujjwal to make classical Indian music accessible to today's youth. He does that by fusing traditional classical instruments with a pop touch.
In May 2022, Ujjwal released his debut album called "Ghataayaam", a short compilation of some of his best Ghatam Fusion music.
