Movie Review: 'Shyloo'; Star Cast: Ganesh, Bhama, Rangayana Raghu, Suchayeendra Prasad and Suresh Chandra; Producer: K. Manju; Director: S. Narayan; Composer: Jessie Gift; Camera: Jagadish Waali; Rating: ** 1/2 - not as good as original, but watchable.
Remaking movies is a not an easy affair as it needs a lot of research and creativity. But producer K. Manju loves remaking films and this time he chose Tamil film 'Mynaa' for a Kannada remake and signed S. Narayan, who also specialises in remaking, to direct it. The film's lead actor Ganesh is also not averse to remakes as he has delivered two big hits 'Chellata' and 'Cheluvina.

Director P.N.Sathya who was acting in character roles in some films turned a hero through his own film 'Paagal' which is produced by his friend and actor Muralidhar. Many directors have turned heroes earlier, but somehow their attempts have not been successful.
Director S. Narayan did achieve a certain degree of success in a few films,.

Still from Almanya
After some furious browsing through the festival booklet, I zeroed in on an Italian film The Salt of Life as my first film of the day. A very funny take on the middle- aged generation. A 50-something forced into early retirement is caught between a demanding mother and his own inability to attract young girls. Sort of like Shaukeen with just one lascivious gent.
Jahnu Barua’s first feature Aparoopa was part of the Indian Retrospective segment. A few discerning viewers chose it over other stuff playing elsewhere. Those that stayed till the end were rewarded with a warm Q & A with the director with cinematographer Binod Pradhan. Mercifully, the questions were meaningful and not ‘These are a few of my favourite things’. One question was on the unavailability of his other films. Barua mentioned that he’s working towards getting his films released on DVD. My fingers are crossed.

First day, first show. Without a festival booklet in hand and no time beforehand to google, I was staring at five movie titles with no clue about what to start off with. Settled for the French film The Minister by Pierre Scholler. A film about a French transport minister, his tribulations, his dilemmas and even his fantasies. Ok stuff.
Up next was The Turin Horse by Bela Tarr. A dude walking in who could not find seats speculated – “It’s a Bela Tarr film. People will be walking out in half an hour and then there will be seats for the taking”. Prophetic words indeed. The multiplex screen could not accommodate the subtitles and so the projectionist began to toggle with the aspect ratio. The film hardly had any dialogues and only comprised of long B & W takes about an old cripple, his daughter and their horse going through daily chores.

Film: ‘Golimar’; Director: Puri Jagannadh; Cast: Gopichand, Priyamani, Roja, Kelly Dorjee, Ali and M.S. Narayan; Music: Chakri; Rating: ***
The exploits of encounter specialists Daya Nayak and Pradeep Sharma in their efforts to eliminate the underworld mafia have inspired many filmmakers to create scripts based or inspired by their lives in different languages.
Now, top Telugu director Puri Jagannadh comes out with ‘Golimar’, where the central character is moulded like Daya Nayak.

The first thing that comes to mind after watching this satire is, can a National Award winning director like S.V. Rajendra Singh Babu make such a crap with such brazen indifference?
Babu.
