Fukuoka (Japan), July 30 (Ians) The United States wrapped up the World Aquatics Championships with their most successful day, clinching three of the six titles available. However, China topped the final standings with a total of 20 gold medals.
The U.S. swim team, victors of 14 gold medals at last year’s Budapest World Championships, took home seven this time, supplementing their tally with 20 silver medals and 11 bronze.
Leading the U.S. charge was world record holder Hunter Armstrong, who spearheaded a 1-2 finish in the men’s 50m backstroke with a time of 24.05 seconds. Defending champion Justin Ress clinched silver in 24.24 seconds.
China’s Xu Jiayu, a two-time 100m backstroke world champion, secured the bronze with a time of 24.50.

While Meilutyte stole the limelight on Tuesday, American swimming superstar Katie Ledecky claimed her fifth 1500m freestyle title while compatriot and Rio Olympic champion Ryan Murphy claimed the men’s 100m backstroke on an eventful day in Japan.

Melbourne, Dec 18 (Ians) Siobhan Haughey of Hong Kong, China on Sunday defended her women’s 200m freestyle title, as the United States topped the medal table at the 16th Fina World Swimming Championships (25m).
The United States won 36 medals, including 17 gold medals, at the six-day short-course event held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Center. Hosts Australia finished second with 26 medals.
On the final day of the event on Sunday, Haughey, the women’s 200m freestyle world record holder, had a comfortable victory in her pet event after touching the wall in 1:51.65.
She led throughout and finished well ahead of Canada’s Rebecca Smith and Marrit Steenbergen of the Netherlands.
