1974 Abitur at the Preetz Gymnasium. Until 1976 studies of special education and biology at the University of Hamburg. 1976 to 1980 Goldsmith apprenticeship with journeyman's certificate, Gülzau Company, Plön.
1983 joined the SPD, 1984 to 1997 member of the local association executive committee, since 1990 member of the SPD Ostholstein district executive committee, from 1992 to 2003 deputy SPD district chairwoman and state party conference delegate, since 1995 state committee delegate and member of the environmental forum, since 2001 federal party conference delegate, since 2003 member of the state executive committee.
1984 Beginning of local political activity as eligible citizen and municipal representative,1990 to 1997 parliamentary group chairwoman, 1994 to 1997 deputy mayor, September 1997 to 2003 mayor; from 1990 to 2003 member of the Schönwalde district committee, January 2001 to 2003 head of the Schönwalde district office.
Since 1994 member of the school association Bungsberg, chairwoman of the school committee, since 1997 member of the Zweckverband Ostholstein (supply and disposal) and the environmental committee (state level) of the Schleswig-Holstein Association of Municipalities, state delegate. 2003 Awarded the Freiherr vom Stein Medal.
Member of the Bundestag since 2002; in the 15th legislative period, main rapporteur for the BMFSFJ in the Budget Committee and for the BMI in the Audit Committee.
