He was the last "staff photographer" employed by the magazine "Country Life" from 1953-1987 to take photographs of the interiors and exteriors of country houses and mansions, often by natural light, aided only by reflectors and without artificial light. He specialised in using large-format (eg 5 x 4 cm) glass-plate "view" cameras, usually made by the Gandolfi brothers of Peckham, which allowed the lens to be shifted sideways to correct for converging vertical lines.
