Ben Savage, the former Boy Meets World star who recently announced that he is running for Congress, landed national exposure with an interview on Thursday’s GMA3: What You Need To Know.
In the interview, the show ran a clip from a 1995 Boy Meets World episode in which his character, Cory Matthews, gives an impassioned speech in running for class president. “I’m not somebody special. I am just an average guy like of you, the simple, hardworking students who struggle day after day. Too much homework. Unfair teachers. And an antiquated justice system that relies too much on detention. And if elected, if I win, and you guys vote for me, I would say, to each and every one of you, ‘Hey, thanks!'”
Savage was asked if the passion of his character or any of that message “still stand today.”
“I think I’d be wearing a better shirt.

The Los Angeles City Council member whose racist slurs in a leaked recording created an uproar resigned Wednesday hours after the state attorney general announced an investigation into possible criminal charges involving a meeting where she made the remarks.
Former Council President Nury Martinez, the first Latina to hold the seat, announced her decision in a press release following a groundswell of outrage and calls for her resignation and those of two other council members involved in the conversation recorded last year.
In the conversation, she made racist remarks about the Black son of a white councilman and other crude comments.
Her resignation statement did not mention those remarks, though in words directed at her daughter she said: “I know I have fallen short recently of the expectations we have for our family. I vow to you that I will strive to be...

Rep. Karen Bass (D-ca) and Councilman Kevin de Leon will take part in a Los Angeles mayoral candidates forum at ICM Partners on Tuesday that will focus on what is perhaps the biggest issue in the race: homelessness.
The event, called Solving Homelessness and sponsored by Politico and ICM Partners, also will feature Alfre Woodard with opening remarks. It comes with just two weeks before the mayoral primary, with polls showing a tight race between Bass and developer Rick Caruso. An ICM Partners spokesperson said that Caruso, who has blanketed Los Angeles airwaves with ads focused on the homelessness crisis, was invited but declined, citing a scheduling conflict.
In a debate in March, Bass said that she would appoint a person who would be in charge of addressing the homelessness crisis and that person would report to her. She also talked of a plan to house 15,000 people in her first year.

The man accused of attacking comedian Dave Chappelle onstage at the Hollywood Bowl has been charged with attempted murder for allegedly stabbing his roommate at a transitional housing facility in December, according to the District Attorney’s Office. Isaiah Lee has pleaded not guilty to the felony charge and is due back in court June 2.
Lee, 23, is accused of rushing Chappelle while carrying a replica gun that contained a switchblade as the comic performed during the Netflix Is a Joke Festival this month. He pleaded not guilty to four misdemeanor counts including battery, possession of a weapon with intent to assault, unauthorized access to the stage area during a performance and commission of an act that delays an event or interferes with a performer.
Lee, who initially was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, remains jailed in lieu of 30,000 bail. If he manages to post bail and is released,...

Update, Wednesday, 3:23 Pm Pt: Organizers said that more than 300 people attended an event at Bad Robot Productions for Karen Bass, as polls show she faces a tight primary race against developer Rick Caruso.
Katie McGrath and J.J. Abrams addressed the crowd at the event, and Norman Lear, 99, was among the attendees and co-chairs. Other co-chairs included Lyn Lear, Damon and Heidi Lindelof, Nina Shaw, Christy Haubegger and Matt Johnson.
The money race between Bass and Caruso has heated up in recent weeks. According to campaign records, Caruso donated an additional 3.25 million to his campaign, while the Los Angeles Police Protective League gave a 1.8 million infusion to its committee opposing Bass.
Last week, Jeffrey Katzenberg donated 600,000 to an independent committee that is backing Bass. The committee, Communities United for Bass for LA Mayor 2022, announced on Wednesday that it was spending 1.07 million for a TV ad buy in a 30-second spot...

Though the Los Angeles Police Department said Sunday that Chris Rock had declined to file a police report against Will Smith after the actor slapped the comedian on stage at the Oscars, there’s a chance that he’s not out of the woods when it comes to legal liability or criminal charges.
In terms of what action the LAPD could take, criminal defense attorney Lara Yeretsian says that if Rock is uninterested in charges being filed, it would take the LAPD claiming something like disturbing the peace for them to bring charges, but such a move would be “highly unlikely.”
“Law enforcement is going to walk away from this. Not with a non-cooperating witness. They need him,” Yeretsian told TheWrap.
And while any other criminal charges would be considered a huge surprise, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible.

Billionaire real estate developer Rick Caruso, who developed the Grove and a number of other high-end commercial properties across the Southland is officially running for mayor of Los Angeles. Long rumored, it became official when he fliled paperwork today with the City Clerk.
“I believe in the LA dream — and I know that we can end homelessness, crime, and corruption. But the politicians can’t,” Caruso said his newly-launched campaign Twitter account. “That’s why today I formally began the process of
running for Mayor of Los Angeles.”

Caruso added that part of his motivation for running is his heritage as “the grandson of immigrants from Boyle Heights.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals upped its campaign this week against Paramount’s forthcoming Jackass Forever. In a letter to Los Angeles Deputy District Attorney Kimberly Abourezk and L.A. City Attorney Mike Feuer, PETA Cousel Caitlin Zittkowski wrote that the film’s trailer contains “scenes apparently involving cruelty to animals.”
She specifically calls out moments that include “Johnny Knoxville being charged by an agitated bull, a person being bitten on the nose by a captive snake, and a tarantula trapped in a plastic tube between two people’s heads.” She notes that, since the film appears to have been shot in L.A., any violations would lie within the purview of their offices. According to IMDb, production did in fact take place in L.A.
The bullfighting scene, for instance, may violate California Penal Code section 597(b), according to Zittkowski. She says that section applies to any...

On Tuesday, in his second appearance on CNN in 4 hours, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said that online, phone order and curbside pickup would expand to “all retail establishments” sometime this week.
“In the coming week,” he said, “it’ll be opened up to all retail establishments.”
On May 6, officials announced that select retail sectors would be allowed to offer online/phone orders and curbside pick-up. Those select businesses included florists (before Mother’s Day), toy stores, music stores, bookstores, clothing and shoe stores and sporting goods stores. Car dealership showrooms were also allowed to open with proper social distancing.
This comes after a day of conflicting signals from elected officials.
First, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that restaurants could reopen for dine-in service, so long as they follow guidelines.
Newsom also said that malls and strip malls could reopen for pickup service.
Then, Dr. Barbara Ferrer, the Director of the L.

Update, 6:03 Pm: If Los Angeles County officials and City of Angels Mayor Eric Garcetti wanted to clear up the continuing confusion around the region’s stay-at-home order possibly extending into the summer, they only seemed to make matters worse as the day went on.
With news releases, cable news appearances and more statements, the two levels of government did little to clarify the remarks earlier Tuesday by County Public Health Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer that with all certainty, the stay-at home order set to expire on May 15 will be expanded all the way to August.”
After already calling into CNN to avert a self-described “panic” over the strict restrictions staying in place, Garcetti went on the WarnerMedia-owned news cabler again later this afternoon to say “it’s important not to overreact…to not freak out.” Likely having the opposite effect of his words, the media friendly Mayor then added,...
