- Selected by Philadelphia Phillies with first overall pick in 1998 Major League Baseball Draft. Drafted by the Boston Red Sox out of high school, but opted to attend the University of Miami instead. Made major league debut on May 24, 2000 for the Phillies vs. the Houston Astros. Has drawn hitting comparisons to Mark McGwire early in his major league career. Tied for major league lead with 18 outfield assists in 2001.

- Filed for free agency November 2008. Was chosen to lead the World Series Parade in Philadelphia. He, his then wife, Michelle and dog Elvis rode with the Budweiser Clydesdales. Had two bulldogs with his ex-wife - Elvis and Priscilla.
- Signed to a minor league contract by the San Francisco Giants, and assigned to AAA Fresno. (May 2010)
- (5 January) Agrees to a 2-year, $16 million deal with the Tampa Bay Rays, the team the Philadelphia Phillies defeated in the World Series. (2009)
- Phillies signed lefty Raul Ibanez as his replacement in December 2008. As of January 3rd Pat Burrell is still a free agent. No news as to where he'll sign. (December 2008)
