- Tulsi Das was a Brahmin Hindi poet and religious reformer. Tulsi Das lived most of his life as an ascetic at the sacred site of Varanasi (Benares) in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. According to legend, he had a dream in which Lord Rama commanded him to write a version of the Sanskrit epic Ramayana (originally written by Valmiki in a language that the common people could understand.
