Tôru Ôta
- Producer
Born in Tokyo in 1958, Toru Ohta is a longtime producer and media executive in Japan. Originally an actor, Mr. Ohta moved into TV production in 1988, working for the gigantic Fuji Television Network, where he initially worked on dramas with strong comic/romantic overtones to them.
But that changed at the end of the 80s and into the next decade, where he helped pioneer what is commonly known in the Far East as the 'trendy drama', which focus more on real life-based issues and stories, and which proved to be a storming success for Fuji TV - and Mr. Ohta.
With TV hit after hit under his belt, he moved into the movies later in the 1990s on those films backed by Fuji TV, such as the 1994 romantic/sports comedy-drama Hero Interview, with Mr. Ohta acting as Fuji TV's producer.
With many years of success to his name, this has been reflected in his advancement through the ranks of both Fuji TV and its parent Fujisankei Corporation, where he oversees several of its divisions, such as their video gaming arm, Fuji Games. He is also, at time of writing (2020), Managing Director of Fuji TV. He remains an important figure in Japan's media landscape to this day.
