In the 1980s, he worked as assistant to theatre manager George Hoare. By 1988, he had bought the second oldest working theatre in the country and refurbished it. He sold it in 1991, and spent the next 10 years as co-director, with Dale Jackley, of the Tristram Trust (named after his middle name).
