TORONTO -- The Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Film Festival said Wednesday that Henry Alex Rubin's Murderball will open its 12th edition April 22 in Toronto. The film about quadriplegics in protective wheelchairs playing full-contact rugby (aka "murderball") recently captured the audience award for best documentary at Sundance. North America's largest documentary festival will close May 1 with the world premiere of Belgian filmmaker Lode Desmet's Heysel '85: Requiem for a Cup Final, an account of the 1985 football game disaster at Brussels' Heysel Stadium in which 39 fans were trampled to death. In all, Hot Docs will unspool 100 documentaries from 23 countries this year.
