He supported the representation of contemporary dramatists like Gehart Hauptmann, Bernard Shaw, Arthur Schnitzler or Frank Wedekind and he soon belonged to the distinctive artists of the Viennese theater scene.

The actor Adolf Weisse got acting lessons by Josef Lewinsky, later he made his stage debut at the Deutsches Theater in Budapest.
His son Hans Weisse (1892 - 1940) became a composer.
He had engagements at different theaters in Germany like in Kassel, Berlin and Cologne. Finally he went to the Volkstheater in Vienna where he appeared regularly from 1889. In 1902 he also took over the direction of this theater.
