Tight knit as it is, the Detroit techno scene is not without its controversies. We provided a brief history of the genre to supplement our recent coverage of Movement 2016, but even we admittedly left out one of its most outspoken early figures: Eddie Fowlkes.
Fowlkes released music shortly before any of the Belleville Three, the trio comprised of Derrick May, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson whom are widely credited as the originators of Detroit techno. As he told us in an interview during Detroit Techno Week, he wishes to not be associated with the Belleville Three and believes that it was devised by May as a means of keeping him and other early techno pioneers from receiving proper credit.
Fowlkes’ resentment towards May is nothing new. We asked May about it as a side note when we met up with him on the same day, and he told us the...

After its tenth anniversary, there’s no denying that Movement has lived up to its name. The Detroit music festival once again succeeded in drawing the techno elite from every corner of the globe to celebrate the genre in the city of its birthplace, but this year’s edition in particular served as a special homecoming of sorts.
After all, the extra year digit was but one milestone reached by the techno community this past week. Shortly before the event took place, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan declared the week of May 23rd-30th Detroit Techno Week. Following that, a business report presented a couple of days later at the International Music Summit in Ibiza revealed that the genre surpassed all others in Beatport downloads last year. Then, on the first day of the festival, the Movement Main Stage was headlined by none other than Kraftwerk – a group whose music tremendously...

With lineup announcements from more contemporary festivals rolling in at a breakneck pace, those that cater to the underground are as welcome as ever. This week, Toronto festival Electric Island released the lineup of its 2016 edition, and as with previous years, it looks to be a five-day house and techno haven.
Even with your eyes closed, you would be hard pressed to put a finger on any point of the lineup without touching the name of an underground favorite. Get Real, Justin Martin, Nicole Moudaber and Sven Väth are but a few of the dozens listed, making for a roster sure to resonate with fans of dance music’s more sophisticated side.
Electric Island takes place over three months, with near-monthly installments that go for either one or two days. Being that the first is less than two months out, lineup announcements by day are sure to follow in the coming weeks – but for now,...

Ultra Miami is still fresh in our minds, but that doesn’t mean we can’t start looking ahead to Ultra Europe and what the festival organizers have in store for us. The initial lineup for the fest itself dropped a few months back and was awfully impressive. Now, we have some details on the rest of the week’s events, including the opening and closing parties.
The celebration will kick off on July 9th in Split at the Giraffe Palm Beach House. Headlining will be none other than Sven Väth, with support from label mates Christian Burkhardt, Maurizio Schmitz and Reach Visuals. Those in attendance can expect a tech-heavy party that is sure to start the week on a high note.
Several days later, on July 15th, the closing party will take place on the island of Vis at Fort George, where Nic Fanciulli and Joris Voorn will be taking to the decks.

After taking some much needed time off from touring to attend to a couple of medical issues, it looks like Avicii is ready to get back into the swing of things. The Swedish DJ has already announced that he’ll be appearing at several festivals this year and today, he revealed that he’ll be making an appearance at Tomorrowland as well.
Tim announced the news via Instagram earlier this morning, saying simply that he’ll be playing in Boom on Friday, July 24th:

After announcing that there would be an opera stage at Tomorrowland this year, with the National Orchestra of Belgium performing, ID&T have made another surprising reveal: There will be a dedicated Sven Väth & Cocoon Recordings vinyl-only stage. The techno god’s label will be hosting the stage on Saturday, hoping to give festivalgoers a breath of fresh air amidst all the mainstream music that will surely dominate the lineup.
A full list of artists playing on Väth’s stage has not been revealed yet, but it’s certainly refreshing to see Tomorrowland pushing some diversity into the festival. It’s clear that they’re trying to appeal to a wider crowd this year and do something different, and that’s definitely commendable. While I’m sure that many people are waiting with baited breath to see who will be headlining the Belgium fest this summer, I think I’m...

Miami — To say that Umf founders Adam Russakoff and Russell Faibisch and their Ultra Music Festival team have another mammoth dance music get-together on their hands is certainly stating the obvious. This weekend, Umf comes home to Bayfront Park in Miami for the first time since 2005. And the number of attendees walking through the three-day electronic dance music festival, one of America's biggest, has swelled from 150,000 last year to a sold-out 200,000 this year. The lineup is exquisite, as usual — literally an act for every taste.

Tiësto has been named the 'Greatest DJ Of All Time'. An online poll for dance music magazine Mixmag placed the Dutch spinner at the top of the list, followed by Richie Hawtin and Sven Väth. Editor of Mixmag Nick DeCosemo said: "Obviously with any public poll the results reflect current popularity as much as overall contribution, but we think that the top ten reflects a great spread of dance music genres and DJs over time.
