By day, Jennifer Turner works in law enforcement in Vancouver. But on this particular late August weekend, she’s in Cleveland, attending JemCon, an annual gathering for devotees of the colorful Eighties cartoon Jem and the Holograms. Turner’s fandom runs deep. She grew up with a single father who supported her love for all things Jem. One Christmas, she woke up to find he had bought her every single Jem-related doll available at the time; other times, he would set an alarm and wake her up early so she...

Special FX artist, Producer, Writer, Director, Film executive and most recently Comic Book Author, twenty year Industry veteran Paul J. Salamoff could be considered a sort of Renaissance man when it comes to the Hollywood machine. He’s also written the definitive guide to Movie Sets called, On The Set: The Hidden Rules Of Movie Making Etiquette. However, what I found to be the most compelling and sobering fact about Paul is that above all else the man is a true fanboy. Like the rest of us, his work stems from his passion for science fiction, horror and fantasy. It reaches back to his childhood and the countless hours spent watching classic films, reading, and just letting his imagination run wild over the limitless possibilities imbedded in the human psyche. Of all the interviews I’ve done over the years with relative strangers, his was the most easy going and comfortable.

It’s no secret that putting U.S. President Barack Obama on the cover of your comic these days is like printing money — no matter how connected the cameo or what the issue contains, it’s going to sell like crazy. So, while comics featuring anyone associated with the president and the 2008 campaign remain hot sellers, it seemed only natural that one particular part of the Obama family receive his own comic. (And to be honest, I’m surprised it took this long.)
“Puppy Power: Bo Obama” hits shelves in September from Bluewater Productions, and promises an “insider’s look at the White House” courtesy of the Obamas’ new dog, Bo. Written by Paul J. Salamoff with art by Emmy Award winning Disney and Warner Brothers artist Keith Tucker, the comic will be aimed at young readers.
