As it begins its 17th year on YouTube, Simon’s Cat is buying into a beloved format. The feline animation hub led by Simon Tofield has launched a “focus music” video that resembles the chill streams hosted by Lofi Girl.
Since arriving on YouTube in 2007, Simon’s Cat has entertained 6.1 million subscribers with whimsical cartoons that detail the titular pet’s hijinks. The latest Simon’s Cat upload is a bit different from the channel’s typical fare. The 41-minute-long video is devoid of feline misadventures. Instead, Simon’s Cat naps on a desk while the viewer enjoys a continuous stream of music.
Though the musical genre and format of the video suggest a collaboration with the Lofi Girl label, “Focus Music to Work and Study to” was actually born out of a partnership between two properties of Banijay Brands‘ U.K. division. The France-based production and distribution company picked up a controlling stake...

After rolling out its Teespring integration across the European Union last month, two top U.K.-based YouTube channels have launched Merch Shelves in recent days -- a feature that makes the ecommerce process virtually seamless. Merch Shelves, which furnish online stores directly beneath videos on both mobile and desktop devices, have arrived on the YouTube hubs for both Simon’s Cat and Mr. Bean.
Simon’s Cat, a cartoon whose mischievous adventures have clocked 1 billion lifetime views, has launched a Merch Shelf complete with Christmas-themed jumpers, hoodies, T-shirts, cushions, and blankets. The channel, which is majority owned by Endemol Shine UK and is celebrating its 10-year anniversary on this year, is the brainchild of London-based animator Simon Tofield.
Other animated characters have found massive success using Merch Shelves. Lucas The Spider, for instance, harnessed his Shelf in June to sell $1 million worth of plushies in just 18 days, according to YouTube.

Between its line of merchandise and its fan-funded, colorized feature called Off to the Vet, the animated web series Simon’s Cat has adeptly advanced beyond its short-form roots. Now, series creator Simon Tofield and production company Endemol Shine UK have announced their latest venture: It’s a mobile game based off the show that will arrive later in 2017.
The game, which does not yet have a title or description, will be a partnership between Endemol Shine UK (which owns a piece of the Simon’s Cat brand) and developer Strawdog Studios. Presumably, the focus will be the mischievous feline of the show’s title, who spends her days finding new ways to irritate her frazzled owner. The game will be free to play with in-app microtransactions.

Berlinale receives record number of submissions.
A total of 63 feature-length and short films produced or co-produced in 35 countries have been invited to participate in the two Berlinale (Feb 11-21) competitions Generation Kplus and Generation 14plus.
The programme, aimed at children and youths, was selected from around 2,000 feature-length and short films submitted to Generation this year, which is more than in any year previously.
The selected films shed light on and challenge the nature of contradictions such as being child-like and being an adult, what is forbidden and what is permitted or the difference between subjective and objective reality.
“Young people world-wide are constantly confronted by dystopic realities not of their own making,” said Maryanne Redpath, head of Generation. “In the diverse films of this year’s programme we see them taking matters into their own hands.”

The cutest animated feline on YouTube has brought its creator a major investment. Production company Endemol Shine UK has purchased a controlling stake in Simon’s Cat, the animation company best known for its titular web series.
In the Simon’s Cat videos, animator Simon Tofield uses slapstick humor to chronicle the relationship between a mischievous cat and his exasperated owner. Episodes of the series are typically one to three minutes long, and Tofield releases a new one every couple of months. Recently, he also went to Indiegogo, where he raised money for “Off to the Vet,” an 11-minute episode that will be animated in full color.
By joining forces with Endemol, Simon’s Cat will become part of the Endemol Beyond network, which includes content from a number of top creators on YouTube, Vine, and other digital platforms. “Simon Tofield is a creative entrepreneur and has built his business into an international online success,...

Simon Tofield has entertained internet audiences since way back in 2008 by way of Simon's Cat, an original online video program he created featuring an incredibly expressive, kinda anthropomorphized, black and white, cartooned feline with a knack for getting into physically comedic situations. Today, the Simon's Cat video catalog is composed of roughly 70 short films of a maximum length of about 180 seconds each. And those three-minute snippets of Simon's cat's life have elicited smiles and genuine laughs from a YouTube audience that's than 3.4 million subscribers strong who have - along with the rest of the internet - collectively watched the series' videos more than 633 million times.
That kind of popularity has encouraged Tofield and his team to add no less than 18 physical books and a small collection of fine art prints, human paraphernalia, feline paraphernalia, ceramics, plush toys, and other themed merchandise to the Simon's Cat universe. But soon Tofield and...

Simon Tofield’s path to internet stardom began in 2008 when the iterated off of one of the internet's most perennially popular themes: cats. The British animator uploaded a one-minute-and-37-second cartoon of a crudely drawn but oh-so-cute feline trying to wake up its human owner in a variety of both animal and anthropomorphic ways. The video’s since received over 47 million views and launched a burgeoning animation franchise under the banner of Simon's Cat. It includes a YouTube channel now in possession of over 2.7 million subscribers and 471 million aggregate views, no less than four books, and a relationship with one of the most renowned animation executives in the business. Fred Seibert’s Channel Frederator Network today announced Simon’s Cat has joined its animation-oriented YouTube multi-channel network. Tofield’s channel is the most recent addition to the McN that currently boasts more than 30 million views a month across its over 130 networked channels,...

This is an interesting alliance for animation veteran Fred Seibert whose executive producer credits include Adventure Time, The Fairly OddParents, The Powerpuff Girls, and Dexter’s Laboratory. Animator and director Simon Tofield’s Simon’s Cat is YouTube‘s No. 2 animation channel with 2.75M subscribers. Under the new deal Seibert’s Channel Frederator Network will handle all of Simon’s Cat‘s advertising and distribution including targeted ads that use TrueView and Adwords to cash in on sales of Simon’s Cat licensed merchandise. That could be significant. Simon’s Cat animation appears on Japan’s Nhk and Italy’s LA7, with more than 1.5M books sold in at least 27 countries. There are more than 120 related products including stationary, gifting and apparel. The alliance is “proof of the fact that the internet has ushered in a new golden age of animation,” Seibert says.

“Simon’s Cat,” the second most popular animation channel on YouTube in terms of subscribers, has joined the Channel Frederator Network. Frederator will distribute the channel and sell advertising against it, adding to a network whose 130 channels generate more than 30 million views a month. In 2008, Simon Tofield created “Cat”, an animated cartoon about a house cat and his owner. The channel is a study in quality over quantity; only a few new videos are uploaded each month. However, the channel has a devoted following of more than 2.75 million subscribers – with videos generating more than 470 million views....

New York — They frolic in empty boxes and stick their heads under faucet streams of water. They dance on tippy toes and fly through the air with Pop-Tarts. They play piano wearing little frocks and get tickled to distraction to the delight of millions on YouTube.
I speak, of course, of the cat stars of the Internet, a place filled with felines and their wacky uploading humans since the dawn of bandwidth. Now, after years of viral viewing, they're coming into their own in lucrative and altruistic ways.
The first Internet Cat Video Film Festival drew a Woodstock-esque crowd of more than 10,000 – people, that is – to a Minneapolis art museum in August. Police closed a span of highway clogged with cars trying to get to the Walker Art Center for the free outdoor slate of 80 videos culled from 10,000 submissions that covered the simple, funny moment to polished animations and works made by trained filmmakers.

It is going to be difficult to say anything negative about Simon Tofield’s animated shorts, Simon’s Cat. For starters, they’re cute and inoffensive sketches about a guy’s cat. Small children will likely watch these and giggle, as will folks who like adorable kitties, as will 71 million viewers on YouTube, as will the entire feline-obsessed internet, except for me.
