The greatest literary squash scene known to man—at least the greatest squash scene known to me—occurs in chapter two of Ian McEwan’s praised novel Saturday. If you know of a better example, please tell me. The set-up: Saturday is London brain surgeon Henry Perowne’s day off. His regular squash game with his anesthesiologist partner Jay Strauss figures to be the high point of the first half of his busy off day. Perowne and Strauss take squash very seriously. Perowne is an A-list, type-a doctor who considers squash to be “gladiatorial combat.” He plays even with Straus, but today he is planning to win.
