- Took the historic photo of Lyndon Johnson taking the oath of office as president after John F. Kennedy was assassinated.
- He was an Army captain when he was chosen in 1961 to photograph daily events at the White House. He was the first official White House photographer.
- On November 22, 1963 he was in the fifth car in the presidential motorcade, and heard the fatal shots. He was at Parkland Hospital, where Kennedy died, when he was told to go photograph Johnson's swearing-in aboard Air Force One before the new President left for Washington DC.
- He took about 12,000 pictures during the Kennedy administration. One of his favorites showed the President standing in the Oval Office, clapping as his children danced and played. When Kennedy saw it, he was delighted, and signed it "For Capt. Stoughton, who captured beautifully a happy moment at the White House".
