All reality television competitions run on drama. That’s what casting directors look for in participants; a show of calm, broad-minded, flexible folks certainly wouldn’t be compelling for audiences (and the ratings would be snoozy as well).
But recent headlines suggest a change may need to happen. While these reality TV competitions are entertaining and contribute to enormous viewership, a number of contestants push the envelope excessively — backstabbing, gossiping, and revealing outrageous behavior. The latest example was Sunday night, on the history-making live finale of CBS’ “Big Brother,” when fan favorite Taylor Hale overcame numerous adversities to become the first Black female to ever win a non-celebrity version of the game, taking home 750,000.
In a house with several other contestants who severely bullied her, Hale, a former pageant queen, was made fun of and unfairly ostracized for weeks, becoming the underdog for viewers to root for. Outraged and very vocal on social media,...

Thought-provoking and positive stories go a long way with audiences. That’s what this year’s Emmy nominated casting directors in outstanding casting for a reality program sought when casting their respective shows.
To get those positive stories, honesty and authenticity were key. Combined, these series helped to tell rich and diverse stories.
“RuPaul’s Drag Race”
How does the reigning champion of Reality TV, “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” continue to raise the bar with each new season of the show?
“The Queens themselves continue to raise the bar,” the show’s casting director Goloka Bolte says.
The search for America’s drag superstar is a year-round process. Bolte explains, “We ‘formally’ cast the show for about eight to ten weeks, between when we announce casting and when the final tape submissions are due, but we keep an eye out for fresh talent everywhere we go. Throughout the year I’m bookmarking queens on TikTok,...

Full of body positivity and lots of girl power, Lizzo’s Watch Out For The Big Grrrls proves not every reality competition series needs to be cutthroat to be “must see TV.” And the formula worked for the Grammy Award winner and her team, who were recently nominated for six Emmy Awards including Outstanding Competition Program, Outstanding Casting For a Reality Program, and Outstanding Directing for A Reality Program (Nneka Onuorah).
Lizzo was inspired to launch the series after facing years of challenges finding dancers. And as her productions and tour venues continue to get larger, the Detroit-born singer and performer will always be looking for more Big Grrrls to join the fold.
In conversation with Deadline following the nominations, Lizzo revealed she was especially proud of the casting nomination after that process found the likes of Jayla Sullivan, Charity Holloway, Asia Banks,...

It’s an annual ritual: A “Big Brother” season ends and everyone starts speculating which of that season’s stars will go on “The Amazing Race.” We promptly got an answer last year when Cody and Jessica took off to film “The Amazing Race 30,” which they ended up winning, 11 days after the “Big Brother 19” finale. But you definitely should not expect to see any of the “Big Brother 20” alums on “The Amazing Race 31.”
Why? Simple: It’s already in the can. Season 31 filmed from June 10 to July 3, wrapping up two days before Steve became the first person evicted from the house. Season 31, which will likely air in the winter again, will have some other familiar “Big Brother” faces though: It’s a reality clash theme, featuring stars from CBS’ signature reality series, “Big Brother,” “Survivor” and “The Amazing Race.”

Emmy winner revs up the sexy with “New Kid on the Block” Jonathan Knight, romantic storylines and a U-Turn in the first leg
Tinder and “The Bachelor” are invading “The Amazing Race.” CBS’s 10-time Emmy winning veteran franchise is making changes.
No parent-children teams, no siblings and no best friends will be lugging backpacks and passports. Instead, the new season is 100 percent dating couples, five of whom are on a blind date during race around the world.
That makes it not just a shotgun start to the race, but a shotgun start to five romances, the “Happy Valentine’s season.

TheWrap exclusively interviews the long running CBS competition’s new crew and weighs in on their chances
Five couples on a blind date, one New Kid, and two Olympians are among the newest crop of teams racing around the world for a $1 million dollar prize.
There are no parent-child teams, no siblings, no friends, and not even any married couples. The new “The Amazing Race” is all dating couples.
For the blind daters, if they get along well, they will go from strangers to co-habitating, globe-trotting couples in a matter of hours. These five will have to figure out their ultimate goal: romance,...

It's been a few years since I've talked with Jeff Probst either before a "Survivor" season or before a finale and I'd forgotten that I probably needed to request three or four hours as an interview time. Jeff Probst is in his 28th season of hosting "Survivor" and he still loves talking about the game, talking about his favorite players and the constant surprise that each season brings. You may not agree with his take on things -- I tend to root more for the underdogs, while Probst's love and admiration for certain Alpha Dog contestants is famous/notorious -- but you can't doubt his passion, even if it's for something like this season's all-power Tyler Perry Idol, which has been the source of ample grumbling on my weekly recaps. Tony, the finder of the Tyler Perry Idol, is a Jeff Probst kinda "Survivor" player, while death-cheating Spencer is the...

After a successful season of having former players compete with/against their loved ones on Blood vs. Water, Survivor will try another brand new concept when Survivor: Cagayan premieres with a two-hour episode on Feb. 26 at 8pm on CBS. This time, 18 contestants will be separated into three tribes: brawn, brains, and beauty. And while all of those contestants will be new players — marking only the third such all-newbie season in the past nine installments — one of the names may be familiar: former NBA All-Star (and recent visitor to North Korea as part of Dennis Rodman’s basketball troupe) Cliff Robinson.

Survivor and Big Brother both launched in the summer of 2000. Both involve contestants voting each other out in the hopes of wining a big cash prize. And both air on CBS. But the shows have far more differences than similarities. Survivor takes place entirely outdoors in exotic locations halfway around the world, while Big Brother is set in a tricked-out house in Los Angeles. For years, Survivor (along with The Amazing Race) was considered the gold standard of reality programming, while Big Brother is more of cheesy guilty pleasure in which contestants dress up in hot dog costumes and must...

Jeff Probst already announced on Entertainment Weekly Radio that the next season of Survivor — subtitled Blood vs. Water — would feature returning Survivor contestants playing with (or, rather, against) their loved ones. Then, yesterday we revealed that one of those pairs would be Survivor: One World’s Kat Edorsson and her boyfriend, Big Brother season 12 winner Hayden Moss. Now the rest of the cast can be officially unveiled. And that cast will be playing in the most twist-heavy Survivor season ever.

Each week, host Jeff Probst answers a few questions about the most recent episode of Survivor: One World.
Entertainment Weekly: I have to say, I felt something was missing at the reward challenge — you! Why decide to go the Do It Yourself challenge route, and how many contingencies did you guys have to work out beforehand since you wouldn’t be on hand to officiate in case something funky happened?
Jeff Probst: We’ve experimented in the past with the Diy simply as a way to generate a new kind of reality where the two tribes must work together...

A Survivor Nicaragua cast member said in an interview that she was surprised by how many of her fellow competitors had been recruited, and how that affected their preparation for the show, but CBS stopped her from discussing that--even though it's not surprising at all. Recruiting is nothing new, and has, in fact, brought us some of the show's most memorable contestants and best players. It's something casting director Lynne Spillman discussed with me at...
