- Graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill with double major in Radio/TV/Motion Pictures and Dramatic Art. Received Masters Degree (MBA) from UNC-Greensboro. In addition to feature length motion pictures, total body of work in television productions, short films, sponsored films, commercials, and corporate/industrial videos totals in the thousands. Also helped in the selection of architects and original planning for the construction of the site and production complex for The NCSA School of Filmmaking in Winston-Salem, NC.
- Supervised and (along with the original Dean of the Program) chose finalists for the selection of Architects & original planning for the construction of the present site for the Production/Studio complex of The North Carolina School of the Arts - School of Filmmaking in Winston-Salem, NC. Also in charge of travel, research, budgeting & procuring the original purchases (1993-94) for the new complex now at UNC-SA Film School Program.
- First feature film for Mr. Smoot was a low-budget Drive-In movie titled "Hot Summer in Barefoot County" in 1973.
