“Outer Range,” the new Josh Brolin-led Western series from Prime Video, aims to twist the well-worn genre at its very roots. To showcase the land of the West in a never-before-seen fashion, the eight-episode series mixes in an element of the supernatural, with mind-bending results.
“It took a very simple, straight-forward genre and then it took extraordinary twists, whether it be metaphysical or whatever you want to call it,” Brolin told Variety at the show’s premiere at Hollywood’s Harmony Gold theater on Thursday night. “It’s uncertain because there are so many directions it can go, and a lot of them can feel really cliché. But I feel like we kept it grounded.”
Brolin serves as an executive producer and leads the cast, playing Wyoming ranger Royal Abbott. When Royal finds a mysterious black hole in his pasture, he and his whole family are sent spiraling. The...

The Tenth Doctor always wanted to be ginger, but now, former Doctor Who star David Tennant has gone red-headed for his latest role. Recently, the long-in-the-tooth adaptation of Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman’s beloved novel Good Omens finally got going, with Tennant playing the demon Crowley and Michael Sheen as his unlikely friend the angel, Aziraphale. Together, the pair have to avert the end of the world in this imaginative apocalyptic comedy.
To complete their transformation into citizens of heaven and hell, Tennant and Sheen have both donned new hairstyles. The latter has gone blonde for the show while Tennant is sporting a fetching red ‘do. Check them out in the Tweets below (which also feature Amazon Studios’ head of casting, Donna Rosenstein).

As its original series slate continues to grow rapidly, Amazon Studios is bringing in veteran casting director Donna Rosenstein as head of casting. Amazon, the youngest of the Big 3 streaming services, is the first to employ an in-house head of casting, something Netflix and Hulu have not done. Even some cable networks, like Starz and Wgn America, don’t have casting executives, instead relying on casting directors who work on a consulting basis. Amazon, which ordered its…...

Four drama pilots ordered by the CW, including “Oxygen,” which is set to shoot in New Orleans, now have casting directors attached, Backstage has learned. “Oxygen,” which centers on a program that integrates humanoid aliens into a high school with dramatic results for the community, is set to be cast by Burbank-based Donna Rosenstein and Kendra Castleberry. USA has officially renewed “Necessary Roughness,” its hour-long scripted drama starring Callie Thorne as a psychotherapist for the fictional New York Hawks football team, for a 10-episode third season, the network announced Jan. 7. The series is cast by Donna Rosenstein and Marlo Tiede. The second season of “Necessary Roughness” resumes Jan. 23. “ ‘Necessary Roughness’ is an important page in our network playbook,” USA Co-Presidents Jeff Wachtel and Chris McCumber said in a joint statement. “With a standout team of actors and writers playing at the top of their game, the upcoming seasons promise to deliver high-impact and creative storytelling.” Comedy Central announced that it has picked up two more seasons of its hit half-hour comedy series “Workaholics,” co-created by and starring Blake Anderson, Adam Devine, and Anders Holm as three slacker roommates who work together at a telemarketing company—usually under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Seasons 4 and 5 will each air 13 episodes.

Donna Rosenstein is a huge fan of casting pilots. "I love being part of a project from its inception," she says. "I become close with all the producers and all the people I work with. Casting a pilot is like starting a new family. It's also like childbirth; you forget the pain." Rosenstein has seen the birth of many television series. Recent ones include "Castle," "Grimm," "Necessary Roughness," "Ghost Whisperer," and "October Road" (all of which were cast by her office after pickup). She is also casting the half-hour pilot "Save Me" for NBC. She attended Binghamton University, originally thinking she wanted a career in film and TV production. Because her university didn't have a film and TV department, she created one. She also created the TV station at Binghamton, which still exists. After college, she worked at a talent agency and in development and production jobs until the early.

Lisa Soltau was living in Seattle when her friend Bonnie Gillespie sent her a book she had written called "Casting Qs," a compilation of interviews with casting directors. "I read it and I absolutely loved all the aspects of the job," says Soltau. "I loved the entertainment industry and movies and television. The process of casting sounded wonderful."She called one of the two casting offices in Seattle and ended up working as an intern there for about six months. But the CD told her she should move to New York or Los Angeles if she really wanted to pursue a career in casting. "I picked L.A. because I had lived there once for about three years and I thought it would be easier to acclimate there," Soltau says. "Plus I wanted to work on 'Six Feet Under,' which was airing at the time.
