The Zombies only released two albums during their initial run, but the hits keep them coming back. Director Robert Schwartzman’s documentary, Hung Up on a Dream, named after a song from their classic album Odessey and Oracle, premiered at the Zach Theater during SXSW on March 12. Cooking Vinyl Records will release Different Game on March 31.
The Zombies’ first full-length album since 2015’s Billboard-charting Still Got That Hunger features founding keyboardist Rod Argent and lead singer Colin Blunstone, along with drummer Steve Rodford, guitarist Tom Toomey, and bassist Søren Koch. It retains the variety of sounds the band has been cultivating since their formation in 1961.
In 1964, The Zombies won a recording contract with Decca Records, the same label as the Rolling Stones, as first prize in a contest sponsored by The London Evening Post. Their single, “She’s Not There,” hit the charts internationally, and the band was part of...

The Zombies have announced a 2020 spring tour — and confirmed that they’re working on a new album, their first since 2015’s Still Got That Hunger.
“It’s now 51 years since ‘Time of the Season’ reached Number one on the U.S. single charts,” keyboardist Rod Argent tells Rolling Stone. The clip above shows the band performing the Sixties anthem in Los Angeles last year. “Unbelievably, it’s a song that feels just as much a joy to play now as it did all those years ago!”

The Kinks were on the verge of collapse when they began 1969’s Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire). They’d just parted ways with original bassist Pete Quaife and their previous album, 1968’s The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society, failed even to chart in their native England despite excellent reviews. Making matters worse, an ongoing feud with the American Federation of Musicians made it impossible for them to tour in the States, a devastating blow at a time when groups like Led Zeppelin and...

The Kinks have been teasing fans about a reunion that never seems to materialize for the greater part of the past decade, but it’s now finally happening. In a 2018 interview with Channel 4 News in England, Ray Davies said he was recording a “new Kinks record” with his brother Dave Davies and original Kinks drummer Mick Avory. “The trouble is, the two remaining members, my brother Dave and Mick, never got along very well,” Ray said. “But I’ve made that work in the studio and it’s fired...

Who would have thought the British Invasion would lead to a Zombie apocalypse? The Rock Hall of Fame did.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class of 2019 includes a witch, a Goth band which celebrated disintegration, and a reanimated squad of necromantic romantics who stormed America as part of the British Invasion. The Zombies should have been the retro rock band of the zombie apocalypse. The off-kilter drum, bass and breath which heralded the oncoming melodic horde of chords of the song "Time of the Season" perfectly suited the march of the undead which altered the world in World War Z. What could be more frightening than being out on patrol with Carol, the most adept walker deterrent on The Walking Dead, running into a bunch of munchers and realize: she's not there? The band never truly embraced horror in a direct musical assault, but they...

When the Zombies were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 29th, keyboardist-songwriter Rod Argent spoke from the stage about growing up in England during the Fifties and first discovering American rock & roll. “Elvis himself was a God,” he said. “I was 11 and I couldn’t imagine in any way being part of the same world.” A few weeks before the ceremony, Argent got on phone with Rolling Stone to discuss five pivotal songs that shaped him as a young songwriter and led to the incredible...

The Zombies had been eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for nearly 30 years — and nominated four times. Yet the group showed no signs of bitterness when they finally walked up to the podium, after introductory remarks by Bangles singer Susanna Hoffs, to accept the honor. In fact, the surviving members looked absolutely ecstatic — as if they’d been waiting for this moment all of their lives. “We’re there forever,” Zombies keyboardist Rod Argent told Rolling Stone on Friday night. “In 300 years time, if someone is researching...
