Country star Johnny Cash's plans to attend last night's MTV Video Music Awards have been scuttled - he's in hospital for an unspecified stomach ailment. Cash, 71, whose video for his song "Hurt" received six VMA nominations, is currently in a stable condition after being admitted to Nashville, Tennessee's Baptist Hospital on Monday. Baptist Hospital spokeswoman Jennifer Jackson says, "He's being held for observation and treatment. We expect to release him within a few days." Cash's manager, Lou Robin, says the illness was an "isolated incident", adding that the country singer had planned to go to Los Angeles next week to record a new album. Robin says Cash will now watch the New York awards show on TV.

Country legend Johnny Cash has been rushed to hospital after suffering an allergic reaction to either food or medicine. The "I Walk The Line" singer's manager Lou Robin said the 70-year-old country music legend was hospitalized yesterday and might remain at Nashville's Baptist Hospital overnight, but that his doctors didn't think the problem was anything serious. He adds, "They're always cautious with any trouble he might have." Cash suffers from autonomic neuropathy, a disease of the nervous system that makes him susceptible to pneumonia. He was hospitalized twice last year for treatment of bronchitis. The Grammy-winner was elected to the Country Music Hall Of Fame in 1980 and the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.
