It is a paradoxical but nonetheless true statement to say that the retro-leaning L.A. rock band Redd Kross was far ahead of their time — not just musically (the power-pop resurgence of the early ’90s) but also in pop-culture worship and the irony that saturated that decade. But their comic take on those things obscures not just what a great rock band they were and still are, but also the fact that they’re legit OGs on any number of levels.
Formed by brothers Jeff and Steve McDonald, they were initially an L.A. punk rock band whose first gig was opening for the legendary Black Flag when they were virtually children. Then, they decided to rebel against the punk scene by committing the ultimate sin: growing their hair and donning garish ’70s clothes, and recording a battery of songs about everything from teen “Exorcist” star Linda Blair to the Brady Bunch.

Last week, more than 400 TV creators and showrunners — all of them women — sent letters to top executives at Hollywood studios demanding that specific safety protocols be put in place for pregnant employees in states where abortion has been outlawed, or soon will be. Now, letters of support signed by 594 men — including J.J. Abrams, Jordan Peele, Greg Berlanti, Donald Glover, Aaron Sorkin, David E. Kelley, Taika Waititi and Ryan Murphy — have been sent to the same companies.
The text of the letter is short, simply saying the undersigned stand with their “female, trans & non-binary showrunner colleagues in demanding a response from our employers regarding the imminent crisis” at hand. It was delivered by replying-all to the first letter, and was sent to Disney, Netflix, Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount, Apple, NBC Universal, Amazon, Lionsgate and AMC.
These activist correspondences have been instigated by the Supreme Court’s June 24 Dobbs decison, which overturned Roe v.

The Brady organization against gun violence is calling on Hollywood writers, directors and producers to examine onscreen gun violence and depictions of gun safety, asking the creative community to sign a pledge that’s already garnered more than 200 signatures of such names as Judd Apatow, Shonda Rhimes, Damon Lindelof and Jimmy Kimmel and the writers of Jimmy Kimmel Live!
The pledge, while noting that the “responsibility lies with lax gun laws supported by those politicians more afraid of losing power than saving lives,” acknowledges that “America’s storytellers” have the power to “effect change.”
“Cultural attitudes toward smoking, drunk driving, seatbelts and marriage equality have all evolved due in large part to movies’ and TV’s influence. It’s time to take on gun safety,” the Brady pledge states, and goes on to ask writers, directors and producers to, whenever possible, to:

Redd Kross are one of the longest-running bands Los Angeles has spawned in its history, with a career that launched in the city’s late 1970s punk scene, carried into the power-pop era of the 1980s, then into the alt-rock boom of the ‘90s and straight into the present — the band released a new album just last month.
While Redd Kross never quite broke through — make that haven’t yet broken through — in as big a way as many thought they deserved, the band has a formidable discography, they’ve always put on enormously entertaining live shows, and the brothers are some of the funniest, most gossip-spewing interviewees one could ever hope for. Netflix has canceled “All About the Washingtons.”
The scripted comedy starred Joseph Simmons — Rev. Run of Run-D.M.C. — and real-life wife Justine Simmons playing fictionalized versions of themselves raising a family of four kids. Netflix has opted not to renew for a second season All About the Washingtons, its multi-camera comedy series starring Joseph “Rev Run” Simmons & Justine Simmons. The decision comes two months after the release of the series’ 10-episode first season, which didn’t seem to get a lot of traction.
Created by Jeremy Bronson (The Mayor), All About The Washingtons had a twisty road to the screen. The pitch originally landed at ABC in fall 2016 with a put pilot commitment. It did not get a pilot order, but, believing in the concept and the talent, producing companies Amblin TV and ABC Studios pulled together resources and used the penalty money to finance a pilot presentation. The presentation was well received by ABC brass but the broadcast network only picked up three new comedy series that year, including Bronson’s The Mayor, and got out of the multi-camera comedy business all together.

Nicky, the half-hour project from Channing Tatum, Reid Carolin and their longtime friend Nick Zano, has sold to CBS with a script commitment. The comedy, co-written and to star Zano, was set up at Warner Bros TV in June. Comedy veterans Andrew Reich & Ted Cohen (Rules Of Engagement) have come on board to co-write with Zano the project, based on Zano’s experiences being raised in a multi-generational house of seven women in New Jersey. He will play 30-year old Nicky, who is trying to finally move out of the house only to realize he needs to stay and help raise his youngest sister. Tatum and Carolin will executive produce through their production company, marking the duo’s first foray into TV series, along with Reich and Cohen, while Zano will co-executive produce. Zano, Tatum and Carolin, who have been friends for years, had been looking for a way to...

ABC is giving new life to "Super Fun Night," a comedy pilot written by and starring "Bridesmaids" scene-stealer Rebel Wilson.
The show, about three geeky female friends and their quest to liven up their Friday nights, was in contention at CBS last pilot season (and was on Zap2it's list of pilots we hoped to see picked up). The network passed, but ABC took an interest over the summer and has now greenlit a new pilot, Deadline reports.
The show will get a pretty extensive revamping in its new home. It was shot as a multi-camera show at CBS, but the new version will be single-camera. Wilson's friends, played by Jenny Slate and Edi Patterson in the first pilot, will be recast.
"Super Fun Night" also has a new showrunner in "30 Rock" and "Larry Sanders Show" veteran John Riggi. He takes over from Ted Cohen and Andrew Reich ("Friends," "Work It...

Exclusive: Rebel Wilson’s comedy Super Fun Night has formally been greenlighted to pilot at ABC, with 30 Rock veteran John Riggi on board as showrunner. The project, executive produced by Conan O’Brien, was originally developed as a multi-camera sitcom for CBS last season. After it didn’t make the cut, ABC decided to give it another go, this time as a single-camera comedy. Written by and starring Bridesmaids standout Wilson, Super Fun Night follows three nerdy female friends, one played by Wilson, on their “funcomfortable” quest to have “super fun” every Friday night. The other two leads are being recast for the ABC pilot; they were played by Jenny Slate and Edi Patterson in the CBS one. UTA-repped Riggi, who is supervising the writing, succeeds Ted Cohen & Andrew Reich, who had only signed on for the original pilot at CBS. The gig stems from the rich two-year deal Riggi...

Exclusive: Rebel Wilson’s CBS comedy pilot Super Fun Night is getting what every busted pilot dreams of but very few can accomplish — a second chance. I’ve learned that ABC is close to a deal to re-pilot the project, written by and starring Bridesmaids standout Wilson and executive produced by Conan O’Brien. It follows three nerdy female friends, one played by Wilson, on their “funcomfortable” quest to have “super fun” every Friday night. Related: Upfront 2012: What Pilots Are Still Alive I hear that the comedy, originally written as multi-camera for CBS, will now be reworked as single-camera, the predominant comedy format at ABC. ABC topper Paul Lee has spoken about his desire to build a block of edgy young ensemble comedies around Happy Endings, and Super Fun Night, along with newbie Don’t Trust The B—-, which will be paired with Happy Endings in the fall,...

It is indeed pilot season and it was one heck of a busy week. Every major network has greenlit a slew of great (and not so great) new shows that we may be enjoying sometime soon. For those unable to keep up with it all, here’s a rundown of new shows we can expect to come to primetime sometime soon.
Quean is a new cop drama from Ileen Chaiken, executive producer and showrunner of the L word. It will focus on a rebel girl with some serious hacker skills, which she uses to help a detective get to the bottom of the crimeworld. Sounds a bit like The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo but with a little less spunk and a little more drama.

From “needing some work” to “a drag in every way” television critics throughout North America have had quite a field day in writing about ABC’s cross dressing comedy Work It. And for good reason, it’s not a very good show.
Yet rather than simply pile on to the chorus of criticism that the internet has been heaping upon executive producers Ted Cohen and Andrew Reich (Who we can only hope for the sake of their sanity are sitting on a beautiful beach thousands of miles from the nearest Wi-Fi connection at this very moment) we thought — in the spirit of the New Year and all — we’d do something somewhat uncharacteristic of us: Focus on the positives.
Which is to say, if you can make it past the unbelievable premise that has unemployed friends Lee Standish (Big Love’s Ben Koldyke) and Angel Ortiz (Prison Break’s Amaury Nolasco...

Next month, a new sitcom called "Work It," about two out-of-work salesmen who dress up as women to get jobs, will make its debut on ABC. There's nothing new about the premise -- Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari covered the same ground on the early-80s sitcom "Bosom Buddies" -- and the tone isn't exactly novel either. The stars of the show, Ben Koldyke and Amaury Nolasco, are operating in the prevailing frat-boy mode perfected by Bradley Cooper and Seann William Scott.
In May, an 84-second trailer of "Work It" hit the Internet, instantly attracting more blogger rage than most shows accumulate over the course of several seasons. Gobsmacked by the very fact that "This got made! And is going to series!", The Futon Critic lambasted the show's "limp attempts at misogyny," "groan worthy madcappery" and "Mrs. Doubtfire hijinx."

Fresh off his co-starring turn on HBO's Entourage as Ari Gold's long-suffering assistant Lloyd, Rex Lee has joined the cast of ABC's new single-camera comedy series Suburgatory as a regular. Suburgatory centers on Tessa (Jane Levy), a teen girl whose quality of life takes a nosedive when her family moves from the big city to the suburbs. Lee, repped by Apa and Thruline, will play Mr. Wolf, Tessa's high school guidance counselor who is inviting and slightly clueless to the bitchiness and the back-stabbing within the student hierarchy. He was a guest star in the pilot and is now being added to the series as a regular. Entourage kicked off its final season last night. Newcomer Hannah Sullivan has landed a series regular role on another new ABC comedy, Work It. The multicamera comedy, from Andrew Reich and Ted Cohen, is about out-of-work car salesmen Lee (Ben Koldyke) and Angel...

Here is the second-annual honor roll of the best and brightest at the broadcast upfront. First off, to all who got their pilots picked up to series -- congratulations. You're already winners. This is a list of those who took their upfront success to an extra level: Whitney Cummings: The undisputed queen of Upfront 2011. She is behind two new comedy series that are among the highest-profile new half-hour entries next fall. She created, stars in and executive produces her eponymous comedy for NBC, which was assigned the network's best comedy slot, following The Office. She also co-wrote on spec with Michael Patrick King the CBS comedy 2 Broke Girls, which broke records as CBS' best-testing pilot (comedy or drama) ever. Both were the first comedy pilots to get a series order at their networks. Cummings, who also has a talk show in contention at E!, will serve as an executive...

ABC has a slew of new shows coming, many of which need a lot of luck if they're going to last more than a handful of episodes. The schedule has been released, so let's take a lot at what's coming.
Oddly enough, as part of the new announcement, ABC has solidified the return of several more shows, including Happy Endings, despite the fact that two other networks have shows on their slate with cast members from the show. That should be interesting. Of course, it works for me, because I'm a fan.
In other news, Desperate Housewives will not die. Are you kidding me with this show still being on?
New Series - “Apartment 23,” “Charlie’s Angels,” “Good Christian Belles,” “Last Man Standing,” “Man Up,” “Missing,” “Once Upon a Time,” “Pan Am,” “Revenge,” “The River,” “Scandal,” “Suburgatory” and “Work It” Join the Lineup

Earlier we shared ABC's primetime lineup, and now we have some clips from the new comedy series for you. The new comedies include Apartment 23, Suburgatory, Last Man Standing, Man Up, and Work It. So far I think Apartment 23 looks the best. Check out the clips below and let us know what shows you are liking the most.
Apartment 23
After a naive Midwestern girl's big city dreams are dashed her first week in New York, she finds herself living with her worst nightmare in this hilarious, contemporary comedy about a female odd couple who are surrounded by an outrageous cast of characters. June (Dreama Walker) moves to Manhattan for a dream job and the perfect company apartment, only to have them disappear in a puff of reality, thanks to a CEO from the Bernie Madoff school of embezzlement. Deep in debt and out on the streets, June scrambles to land a job and place to live.

NBC and Fox have both unleashed their Fall 2011-2012 TV schedule, now ABC has released theirs. I’m excited to see Castle, Modern Family, and The Middle back in the mix. Most of the new shows they have line-up don’t really interest me, but there are a few that have caught my eye. PanAm is another 1960’s based TV show that will go against AMC’s Mad Men and NBC’s The Playboy Club. There’s a show called Revenge that sounds really interesting, but the new series I’m most excited about is is the fantasy series Once Upon A Time, a show where fairy tales collide with the modern day.
Here is ABC’s full schedule along with a description of all of their shows. Go through them below and let us know what TV series you’re most excited about seeing.

ABC hopes 13 is its lucky number. The network has picked up a baker’s dozen new shows to populate its fall and midseason schedule, which includes opening a new comedy block.
Mondays will stay the same with Dancing With the Stars and Castle. Tuesdays will open with a comedy hour that includes Tim Allen’s new sitcom, Last Man Standing, paired with another new comedy, Man Up. Wednesdays adds new comedy Suburgatory, plus soap thriller, Revenge, at 10 p.m., with Cougar Town shifting to midseason and Happy Endings getting the Modern Family lead-in. Charlie’s Angels will go into Thursdays at 8 p.
